Today, Copenhagen is THE top destination for foodies. Travelers arrive to this beautiful city with the expectations to eat well in both taste and quality. Besides its #1 restaurant Noma (which is closed at the time of this article’s publication,) there’s an enormous list of restaurants to choose from. We’ve filtered down to 5, and a bonus, choices that will be sure your tasting the most natural foods served in exciting manners.

Amass Restaurant

Former Head Chef at Noma, Matt Orlando, outstandingly transforms an old shipyard building into one of the coolest spaces to indulge in innovative gastronomy in Copenhagen. Situated a bit outside of the city center (about a 15-minute cab ride,) Amass‘ interior graffiti reflects upon the chef’s background as a skater growing up in San Diego. The garden outside, with a green house caring for Mother Earth’s most natural and gorgeous herbs, plants and treasured edible. Orlando wanted to challenge the concept of fine dining, while his food mellifluously sings from acidity, taste of the sea to sweetness humming from carrots to chocolates.

A completely different approach to Amass Restaurant, Kokkeriet is a Michelin star known for transforming traditional Danish dishes into modern artistic plates. Chef David Johansen took some of his grandmother’s favorites along with the famous Danish open sandwich, and reimagined them into gastronomic fantasies. As the chef exclusively told Jetset Times, “I love having locals come in and say they used to eat this when they were little. I love reinterpreting our childhood memories into something that’s creative and artistic.” The restaurant is located in central Copenhagen and the interior is contemporary elegant.

One thing that Copenhagen has got right is combining healthy eating and sophistication. Atelier September is a great example of this refined concept. The interior has display of Japanese porcelain, art that compliments well with a delicious cup of matcha. Copenhagen is known for its open sandwiches which you can get a healthier version of them here with avocado toast, rye bread with cheese and a vegetarian lunch including yellow beets lentils and mascarpone is also spectacular. Natural foods and organic coffee = what a great start of the day!

One of the best places to get a quick bite to eat is the Torvehallerne Food Market. Over 60 food stands sell incredibly fresh produce to gourmet pastries. One of our favorites is the GRØD stand, which serves porridge bowels that combine oatmeal, fruits, yogurt…and whatever else is in season. Palæo is another interesting stand that focuses on Stone Age food, taking simple elements and making the meals innovative and yummy.

Across the bridge, on the other side of Nyhavn is the Copenhagen Street Food which you simply can’t miss! By the gorgeous waterside is an old factory that hubs numerous food stands that feature dishes from around the world. From Korean BBQ, to French-inspired crème brûlée doughnuts, you’ll have tons of choices to choose from. Walking through the stands is an eye-opening experience in itself. We highly recommend grabbing a meal with a pint of beer, and indulge the outdoors by the water with local Danes.

BONUS: Street Hot Dog

All over the city, you’ll see many street stands selling hot dogs. Most of them are even organic hot dogs! Pølse as they’re called in Danish, is a must-eat, similar to those New York street hot dogs. The Scandinavian version though comes with crispy or raw onions and remoulade. These make superb snacks or late-night after-drinks hunger-fillers!
