Dushanbe has one airport: Dushanbe International Airport. The best way to reach the city center is by taxi or a car rental since public transportation is limited.

The best way to get around Dushanbe is by car. Ride-sharing apps such as Yandex Go can be used across the country. For off-trekk adventures, a private driver is recommended; however, beware of potential earthquakes, avalanches, mudslides, and floods. For car rentals, an international driver’s permit is required.  

Ride-sharing apps such as Yandex Go, Maxim, Rakhsh, and Yak can be used in Dushanbe. It is also common to hail a taxi on the side of the road.

Just like any other popular destination, female solo travelers need to practice general precaution. Tajikistan, however, is considered safe since police guards can be spotted frequently in public spaces. Be especially careful with your personal belongings. Bear in mind, the Kyrgyzstan, China, and Afghanistan border may have unexploded landmines and political unrest.

The best time to visit Dushanbe is April and September, when the temperature isn’t too hot or cold. Summers can be too hot for those who prefer cooler climate, since 86°F is the average temperature in July. In January, 0°F is the average degree. 

The official languages of Tajikistan are Tajiki and Russian. Some younger locals speak English, so you won’t necessarily need a guide but it can be helpful for those who don’t speak English, Tajiki or Russian. 

• Since Dushanbe has a high Muslim population, it’s recommended to pack modest attire. Women should prepare a scarf for entering mosques. 
• To greet a local, a handshake or waving is acceptable.
• Refrain from using your left hand for greetings, giving, or receiving things, since it’s perceived as a “dirty hand” for using the bathroom. 

Tajikistani Somoni is the currency of Tajikistan. Carrying cash is essential since few establishments accept electronic payments. 

Tipping! It’s common to leave a 10% tip to waiters in restaurants, otherwise it is not expected but always appreciated. 

It’s not recommended to drink tap water unless it has been boiled or filtered, so bottled is best. Restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled is requested.

All major cities offer free Wi-Fi in public spaces and internet cafés. Prepaid SIM cards are easy to purchase when you arrive in Dushanbe and are recommended for longer stays. 

Since 1998, same-sex relationships are legal; however, to prevent discrimination and harassment, it’s recommended to avoid PDA.
