Cardona, Spain is a town preserved in its Medieval glory, beckoning tourists up to its remaining castle and into a world of myths, dukes, and conquests.

Less than 45 minutes from Barcelona, Cardona sports an incredible castle turned hotel, salt caves that bring out the explorer in everyone, and a quaint little town with some of the best souvenirs and food that can only be found in rural Spain.

Visiting Cardona this year? Make sure to hit these five major things:

1. Stay at the Parador, Cardona.

Ever wanted to be a princess or a knight? The Parador de Cardona is your key to the throne. Located at the very top of a hill and overlooking the entire city, this castle turned hotel is complete with an exquisite restaurant, its very own medieval cathedral, a sauna, beautiful rooms, and, of course, a haunted legend. If you’re visiting Cardona, the castle is a must-see if not a must-stay. In search of ghosts? Make sure to request room 712!

2. Visit the Salt Mines.

I’ve visited a few caves in my travels but these salt mines were by far some of my favorites. The tour is structured so that it is informative but with an in-depth view of the caves. It is incredibly hands on, allows photos later in the tour, and the total time is about an hour. This was well worth the visit and an incredible highlight of the weekend.

3. Take a tour of the castle.

Whether you stay at the castle or somewhere in town, be sure to visit the tourist center at the entrance to the castle and book a tour. For only a few euros, you get to visit the medieval church, a historical tour of the castle, and a climb of the famed tower of the minyona (maiden).

4. Eat in the town.

Boasting some incredible Spanish cuisine at amazingly low prices, the hot spots in town are absolutely necessary. Stop by a local bar for the best croquetas and patatats bravas that you will eat. Remember that they observe siesta in Spain between 2pm and 5pm but the bars and restaurants are open then so plan the day accordingly.

5. Make stops along the scenic drive.

To reach Cardona, you have to drive past some other beautiful Spanish towns like Terrassa and Manresa. Each offers something unique so if you’re looking to make a longer weekend trip, plan some tourist stops in each.

And most of all…don’t forget your camera!
