Until January 11, 2026, Musée du Luxembourg is hosting a Pierre Soulages exhibition in Paris. Often referred to as “The Painter of Black,” Soulages was renowned for analyzing black as a color and a non-color, simultaneously viewing it as a luminous color through experimentations with its reflections from light, transcended palette from darkness to brightness.

The exhibition depicts on Soulages’ work on paper from as early as 1946, when he recurrently explored with walnut stain, brushed sweeping strokes that became notable during the abstract movement. “Soulages, une autre lumière” includes 130 stunning works from mostly between 1940s-2000s, with some pieces using ink and gouache. The display of pieces allows visitors to freely admire every art work and to deeply explore Soulages’ desire to simplify the color black, by highlighting texture and form.
