THE HISTORY
Hotel Ottilia embodies rich ties to local history since it’s dashingly harbored in a former brewhouse of Carlsberg Brewery – the iconic Danish beer. The incipiently Functionalist architecture was constructed in 1969 – known as Lagerkælder 3 or Storage Cellar 3 – and incorporated enough space to store 6 million liters of beer.

The other part of the building, designed by Danish architect Jens Vilhelm Dahlerup known for historic styles, was previously a malt chamber from 1881, used as a brewhouse in addition to storing machines and malt.
The other part of the edifice was previously used to house unmarried employees that worked at the brewery, they also served as fire guards in case of emergency. The water tower remains visible today, preserving local history.

“The hotel was built with the respect of true heritage. Even the colors, and the paint on the walls needed to be a special paint. The bricks were required to be preserved as part of the lineage of this neighborhood.” Lene Larsen, Genera Manager of Hotel Ottilia, explained.

THE ARCHITECTURE
Where Hotel Ottilia is located today was Storage Cellar 3, designed by Svenn Eske Kristensen, one of the most prolific Danish modernist architects of the 20th century. It’s hard to miss the building’s exterior signature circular discs that are utterly striking. Five rows of 50 mosaic discs made from real gold, each symbolizes cylindrical tank of golden beers, horizontally designed with the exact diameter originally placed on the other side of the building.

“When the building was reconstructed in 1969, there were 64 or 68 gold circles and were very expensive. At the time, people thought it was ridiculous to spend so much money on a storage house. When it became a hotel, the circles were repurposed,” Larsen said.

THE LOCATION
Situated in the stylish Vesterbro neighborhood, Hotel Ottilia is at the heart of popular and trendy mix of shops, restaurants and nightlife. The district is also home to young families and locals that work in creative industries. Nyhavn Canal is a mere 10-minute drive from the property, while Copenhagen Zoo only requires a quick 15-minute walk.
Around the corner from the hotel are: Hart Bakery (cardamom buns,) Hija de Sanchez (tacos,) Københavns Bageri (BMO – bun with cheese,) Coffee Collective (Hacienda la Esmeralda Panama Geisha coffee)…just to name a few.

THE DESIGN
In contrast to other properties, Hotel Ottilia’s main entrance isn’t on the ground floor. Although, the main door opens to an industrial and ample space which leads guests to elevators that lift to the second floor’s welcoming lobby.
The industrial space is illuminated by natural rays and contemporary “spine lights” upholstered throughout the hotel’s common areas, positioning themselves as the hotel’s spine. Ivory walls, angular shapes of the former brewhouse are kept to merge the building’s vast history and modern Scandinavian designs.

Sleek lines, natural wood, use of plants and nature are implemented throughout the interior space. Pools of shallow water by the reception area and lobby bar transmit a sense of harmony and tranquility. The integration of metal exude symmetry and open concrete walls well maintain the aesthetic of simplicity, adhering to Danish artistic rudiments.

Stroll beyond the reception and bar area, a capacious lounge awaits. Vaulted ceiling guard over plentiful plush couches beside collections of magnificent paintings created by Danish artists, some may simply be passing by.
