Olivia’s properties are housed in classic buildings with historical significance throughout Porto. At the moment, the brand has three properties in Porto including, Exmo, 1872 River House and Marques Garden House, with aspirations to expand to Lisbon and other parts of Portugal. Each property has its own style and design, as no two hotels under the brand share the same aesthetic. Olivia has a dedication to spotlighting exclusively Portuguese designers and artists within their properties.

THE DESIGN

Exmo Hotel is the most contemporary member of Olivia Singular Houses. The property focuses on industrial design, while that certainly does not take away from the hotel’s welcoming and comfortable nature. The lobby and bar are cozy and chic, with mid-century furnishings accented by plants and comforting shades of olive green. There’s a gorgeous custom mural painted onto tiles by local artist Manuela Pimentel, which combines fresh, contemporary art with quintessential Portuguese tradition of painting on azulejo tiles.

The original 14th-century stone walls are exposed and present throughout the hotel, displaying the building’s historic roots. The elegant marigold yellow edifice in which Exmo is housed was previously a noble prince’s residence as well as a former customs house in Porto. There’s a historic gallery downstairs where guests can see the inscriptions by the original stonemasons in old Portuguese. The gallery also features a chic library where guests can lounge in and also watch football matches on game days.

The chic lobby bar is where guests start their day with a simple breakfast, featuring local Portuguese treats and products. In the afternoon, the bar also offers a tapas menu centered around bacalhau, so that guests can snack on unique bites like codfish burritos or omelets. There’s a handy selection of local wines, as well as the beloved porto tonic at the bar throughout the day.

THE LOCATION

The location of Exmo Hotel is truly unbeatable for everyone who wants a convenient base from which they can explore on foot all of Porto’s most popular attractions. Exmo is located right around the corner from the main sightseeing area of Riberia do Porto. Guests can walk out of the hotel and be at the Douro and Ponte Luis I Bridge within minutes.

But the best part is that Exmo is not in the middle of the heavy tourist fray, as the hotel is not located along the river but rather on the parallel street which runs right above it. Thus, Exmo Hotel serves as the ideal base to walk to all the attractions around the river, as well as the local nightlife area in Galerias de Paris.
