THE HISTORY
Casa Nereta is a quiet boutique hotel tucked away at the top of the eastern hill of Cadaqués. The hotel is lodged in the former home of the surrealist Catalan painter, Joan Ponç, who bought the house in the 1960s and turned it into his residence and studio. In the 90s, his son Joan Pons and wife, Romy Pons Ruiz, converted the house into a boutique hotel after Joan Ponç’s death.

In 2016, Ponç’s grandson, James Pons, rebranded the hotel as Casa Nereta. The love for the arts is alive and well in James’ grandfather’s home. Every corner of Casa Nereta is a testament to intentional and thoughtful design.

THE DESIGN

The design of each space feels relaxed and effortless. Clean white surfaces against rustic earth tones and accents recreate Balearic Island style at its finest, providing the ideal backdrop for a leisure seaside getaway. The unique undulating ceilings create a sense of flow and lightness.

The main common space with long wooden tables, funky ceramics, and vases of plants; allows guests to feel right at home, as if staying at a close friend’s rustic villa. There’s also the outdoor patio decked out in comfy lawn chairs and tables, perfectly made for guests to gather and pass the time chitchatting, smoking, and drinking.

THE ROOMS

With simply twelve guest rooms, each at Casa Nereta is cozy and inviting. There are funky details that add oodles of charm, like Schiaparelli-inspired gold knobs, a tray of vegan snacks, swirly beeswax candlesticks, and a cup of instant noodles to heat up on hungry nights.
With blue bay windows that frame sunlit trees and charming white houses on the picturesque street, each room is made to unwind and doze off after a sunny day at the beach.

The entire top floor of the hotel consists of the penthouse, which is spectacular for long stays or groups and families. The penthouse is outfitted similar to a large studio apartment with a kitchen, dining room, living room, and master bed. The crown jewel is the huge terrace, accompanied by a panoramic view of the entire town of Cadaqués next to the glittering sea.

THE FOOD
The hotel feels more like a bed and breakfast due to the barebones staff, who mostly leave guests to their own devices throughout the stay. The hotel, however, provides a tasty and wholesome breakfast consisting of yogurt with homemade granola, rustic pan con tomate, both fluffy and filling scrambled eggs.

In the evenings, guests can order plates and snacks from Bistro Nereta set up in the common area and the boho-chic patio. The creative plates have a touch of Japanese inspiration and include bites like cabbage with dashi and miso butter, korokke with BBQ sauce, and matcha Basque cheesecake. Travelers can also order craft cocktails and natural wine to enjoy in the company of other guests in the outdoor patio.

THE SHOP

The common area next to reception also functions as a shop, where guests can buy one-of-a-kind goods made by dedicated artisans. Stock up on coffee roasted by LA CABRA, matcha by Kettl, bath products by FRAMA, and sustainable resort wear and jewelry. Experiencing artisanal goods made by contemporary artists is an important way that the hotel allows guests to experience art during their time at Casa Nereta.
