THE DESIGN

When staying at Aethos Ericeira, you feel like part of the natural environment at all times. Guests are cocooned by earth-tone walls with soft textures, that are simply decorated by delicate artworks whose colors complement the landscape outside. There’s a natural flow with which one moves between inside and outside the hotel. The minimalist thermopine structure which houses the guestrooms is slanted to look windswept, perfectly in tune with the windy seaside climate of Ericeira. Thermopine is the first wood that’s considered 100% environmentally-friendly that contains no traces of chemicals. Such high attention to detail attests to Aetho’s commitment to creating luxury hospitality that’s truly sustainable.

IDEAL VIEWS

As soon as you step outside, you’re surrounded by infinite views of the hazy blue ocean in all directions. The hotel encourages guests to spend time outside by providing a wooden path which wraps around the entire property along the cliff, as well as thoughtfully placed benches to take in the spectacular views.

THE ROOMS

The rooms are simple, yet effortlessly comfortable and made for a good rest. It’s easy to embrace the slow life philosophy when staying at an Aethos property, as everything is designed for simplicity, functionality and taking in the surrounding environment. The bedframes and furniture made of light blonde wood are the main accents in the minimalist guest rooms. This intentionally pulls attention toward the views outside, which may consist of the ocean, gardens or rustic hills surrounding the property. The rooms are also full of small delights, like the Simpli coffee pods with flavors from different origins or the high-quality slippers or tote bags made with sustainable materials, which make the best mementos to take home.

THE AMENITIES

The entire property only consists of 50 rooms and suites, but Aethos Ericeira packs in a ton of amenities and activities for guests to get into. The pool is the most popular option where guests choose to spend their days. The sleek pool is heated and surrounded by lush gardens. The chill, intimate vibe makes it a great place to mingle with other guests. The spa uses only natural ingredients for all of its treatments. As part of the spa facilities, there’s a hammam and steam room indoors. Everyone should also try the outdoor sauna which offers ocean views and the cold-plunge bath next to it.

Aethos prides itself on providing cultural and wellness experiences for guests to fully immerse themselves in a sense-of-place of their surroundings. Aethos Ericeira offers fitness classes like yoga, pilates and muay thai at accessible price points, with complimentary community yoga on Saturdays. As it’s located in a major surf destination, the property offers private or group surf sessions, hosted by Aethos Pro Surf School.

THE RESTAURANT

The hotel restaurant, ONDA, is an attraction all on its own. Executive chef, Nuno Matos, prides his kitchen on focusing on simplicity and the integrity of local ingredients, in accordance with the holistic philosophy of Aethos.

Naturally, the menu centers around the abundant products found in the surrounding coast, like octopus, garoupa and turbot. All the produce and meat are sourced locally in Portugal as well. While the seafood dishes like the Atlantic octopus with walnut sauce and grapes are fabulous, the hyper-creative plant-based dishes is where ONDA really shines. The most memorable bites consist of plates like the King oyster mushroom bathed in a rich, savory miso sauce and the orange and beetroot salad with blue cheese. Chef Matos wants to continue developing the menu’s plant-based offerings, as global trends and travelers point to a greater demand for vegan and plant-forward cuisines.

THE COCKTAILS

In between meal times, guests are welcome to lounge at the scenic fireside patio overlooking the ocean. On the weekends, the patio hosts vibey DJ sunset sessions in the early evenings. There’s also the crudo bar next to the lobby, which has a fantastic menu of craft signature cocktails. We highly recommend trying a sip of the Humboldt which features pisco with salted coconut and cocoa. The Loggerhead is also highly recommended, which is a frothy, delightful mix of tequila, lychee, sake, kombu and egg white.
