Inside AMERON Berlin Abion Spreebogen Waterside Hotel

Along the winding Spree River sits the industrial and chic AMERON Berlin Abion Spreebogen Waterside Hotel.

By the calm and picturesque banks of the Spree, you’ll get to see and experience a different side of Berlin—a side that’s not characterized by the typical grunge and revelry of the city, but a side that’s whimsical and more rooted in nature.

THE DESIGN

The elegant industrial building which houses the hotel was built in 1890 by the last German Empress and was originally the Carl Bolle dairy factory. The large factory supplied milk and dairy products throughout the entire city. The building design was rather modern and futuristic for its time, as the industrial brick facade does not look out-of-place in today’s hipster modern-day Berlin. The hotel now takes up the first building block to the left and the rest of the former factory, now known as Bolle Meierei, can be used as office and event spaces, completed with a rooftop terrace and bar.

The inside of the hotel is chic and minimalist, accented in shades of turquoise blue to complement the waterside theme. The rooms are spacious and comfy, with even the standard rooms starting at a generous 25 sq m that come with a working desk and plenty of space to move around for two people. The best part is if you get a room with a view looking out to the river and the bridge where the yellow S-Bahn trains cross, as that could easily be the best hotel view in Berlin.

THE GYM

The hotel has its 24-hour fitness center on the top floor. Even the glass-encased gym has fabulous views of the Spree all the way to Potsdamer Platz, which guests can enjoy while working out on a wide range of fitness equipment. There’s also the spa with Finnish sauna on the ground floor of the hotel, which is open to all guests free-of-charge.

THE RESTAURANT

Al fresco dining in all of Berlin really doesn’t get better than the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Carl and Sophie. The classy restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows which display the pretty foliage and views along the Spree. But of course, nothing beats a table outside on the terrace where you can enjoy the gorgeous river views front and center. The restaurant offers diners a chance to experience native German produce and ingredients of the finest quality. The meat, such as the bacon and beef filet, is sourced from a farm in Bavaria that’s dedicated to rearing local German species of cattle, pigs and sheep. The menu is also very vegetable-forward, with a wide variety of colorful produce like young kohlrabi (German turnips), artichokes, pink radish and Frankfurt green herbs.

Afternoon cocktails by the river are a must for all guests staying at the hotel. The bar at Carl and Sophie has an impressive cocktail menu of signatures, classics and mocktails. Original signature cocktails include alluring options like the Gin Hibiskus Fizz or the Pineapple Highball made with homemade pineapple rum. Even the non-alcoholic options are highly appealing, like the Virgin Berlin Sling made with laori juniper, apple juice and spicy ginger or the Berlin Aperitivo with laori and grapefruit. There’s no better way to wind down each day than sipping on a glass of wine or a refreshing cocktail while looking out at the swaying trees and glittering water of the Spree.

THE LOCATION

The residential neighborhood of Bellevue is quiet, leafy and quaint, which is a far cry from the hectic central areas like Mitte, or even the grungy nightlife areas like Kreuzberg. Guests can appreciate staying in a strictly non-tourist area, where you’ll find mostly locals strolling, biking and jogging along the river outside the hotel. The best part is that the location is still prime as the hotel is within walking distance of the beautiful Tiergarten, and close to main tourist attractions like the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate. Bellevue is also very well-connected by trains, as you can take any of the S-Bahn lines of S3, S5, S7 and S9 to get to the major train stops and easily connect to the U-Bahn.
