How To Spend A Week In Prague This December

Prague is a wonderful city to visit at any time of year, but if I had a choice I would always pick December as my favorite time to visit. It may rain and it will be cold, but the atmosphere in the city is like nowhere else. Though other cities might be hunkering down for the winter, Prague ups its game and there seems to be so much more going on than at any other time of the year!

Christmas Markets are of course a December fixture. The biggest Christmas markets can be found at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, but there are also smaller markets that are a delight to discover at Republic Square, Havel’s Market and St George’s Basilica. Dominated by huge illuminated Christmas trees and filled with brightly lit wooden huts, you’ll find a bewildering array of locally produced artisan crafts here, from jewelery, glassware, wooden toys, lace, candles and pretty much anything else you can think of.

If none of that tickles your fancy, then you can graze on delicious street food and warm up with a mulled wine while listening to groups of children in national costume singing carols. If you need to warm up a little more, then try some brisk skating on the outdoor ice rink in the heart of Old Town.

Try as you may but you won’t be able to escape Christmastime when at Prague in December, so if you’ve had your fill of markets there’s plenty more to do to keep you entertained! Prague is a great walking city and there’s always something to see around every corner; when you get cold there’s always a museum or gallery to pop into to pass the time and learn more about this lovely city. Prague really is a city that caters to every taste: you can visit the sex museum or enjoy opera, ballet or a classical concert in any number of stunning venues.

Prague is, of course, famed for its nightlife. If you’re a fan of poker, then you’ll want to make your way to Party Poker’s World Poker Tournament, which runs at the Grandior Hotel from the December 3-6. And afterwards if you’d like to burn off some of that adrenaline from the tournament then head to The One Club, Prague’s premier nightclub. Here you can hit the dance floor and dance all night until 5 a.m.!

Prague probably has more bars and clubs than you’ll ever get to visit in a week! A great way to sample them is to sign up for a Clock Tower Bar Crawl. Tours run every night, seven days a week and the group meets beneath the Astronomical Clock at 8:30 p.m. You’ll get to meet a whole bunch of new people, visit pubs and bars that you never would have found by yourself and, of course, enjoy as many tasty drinks as you can handle! And if you really enjoy it, then feel free to have another shot at it the very next night, as there are plenty of bars and pubs to ensure a truly unique pub-crawl experience! Then, in the morning, you can walk off that aching head of yours and explore different quarters of this amazing and beautiful city, which is packed with so many literary, art and religious landmarks and sites.
