The Perfect “Pick”-nic In Buenos Aires

For the ultimate market experience, head to Pick.

Ditch the 5 dollar footlong. Here in Buenos Aires, you can get a better sub for $3 or $4 bucks. At “The Pick,” a gourmet food market in Recoleta, an avocado, a tomato, a artichoke heart, and a balsamic vegetarian sandwich on a 12-inch baguette “to go” costs only 30 pesos.

If you are thinking right now that it is ridiculous to write an article about a sandwich, then you have not experienced the exultation of devouring a gourmet sandwich for cheaper than you could get a combo meal at McDonalds, which costs around 45 pesos in Argentina.

In addition, while choices for to-go food in Buenos Aires are improving, they are still not quite stellar. It has recently become acceptable to request for coffee-to-go without receiving a confused look. (Starbucks changed this trend with its first coffee shop here in 2008)

Walking into “The Pick” is a nostalgic experience common to any typical, overpriced foodie haven of New York City or Los Angeles, but without the the actuality of paying overprice (with a good exchange rate). The walls are elegantly lined with wooden shelfs filled with bruschetta spreads, homemade jams and bottles of Malbec. In the back of the store, fresh sausages hang seductively over the deli counter where a gastronomic creation awaits you.

Sandwiches start at 30 pesos here. I also eyed a divine looking Caprese salad for 37 pesos, but that would have been about a dollar more. Check out more of The Pick Market, located on: Libertad 1212  Buenos Aires, Capital Federal, Argentina.
