How To Play Poker?

Poker is one of the earliest casino games that found its way into popular culture thanks to its adaptation in countless movies, literature, and music.

The rise of online casinos has also contributed to its popularity, with many variations available to choose from. However, you need luck, excellent skills, and strategy to master the game despite many variations being available. That’s why learning poker basics is a must for beginners who want to start playing the game lucratively.

The Pack

Poker is a one-deck game played with 52 cards, although one or two jokers are occasionally added depending on the variation. However, similar to all games played in clubs, two decks of contrasting colors are used to speed up the game, although only one pack is dealt while the other is prepared for the next deal.

When using two decks, one dealer handles the game progress while the other collects the cards from the previous deal and shuffles them ahead of the next round. That’s because it’s customary to change the card regularly and allow the players to call new cards as they want. However, both packs are replaced when new cards are called, and the cellophane wrapping is broken as the players see.

Cards Values

While there are different poker variations available online and in traditional casinos, players who understand the value of the hands can play any variation without any difficulty. However, there are a few variations where a poker hand features five cards. These poker hand combinations rank from no pair/ nothing (the lowest hand) to five of a kind (the best hand).

  1. No Pair – This common poker hand contains nothing, with no pair up in the five cards or being consecutive in the ranking. When two or more players have no pair, the poker hands are rated according to the highest card that every card contains. That means an ace-high hand will beat a king-high hand and so on.
  2. Five of a Kind – Ranking as the highest possible poker hand, this combination occurs only in games with at least one wild card like a joker, the four deuces, or two one-eyed jacks. A good example of a five-of-a-kind hand would include four 10s and a joker or three wild cards and two queens.
  • Straight Flush – When using the standard pack, the straight flush is the highest possible hand, as there are no wild cards. This hand consists of five cards with the same suit following each other in a sequence like 5,6,7, 8, and 9 of hearts. However, the highest-ranking straight flush features 10, J, Q, K, and A of the same suit, also known as a royal flush.
  1. Four of a Kind – From the straight flush, this is the next highest ranking poker hand. The hand features four cards of the same rank, but the fifth unmatched card doesn’t matter.
  2. Full House – This colorful poker hand features three cards of the same rank and two more cards of another rank. For instance, you’ll have a full house with three aces and two fours.
  3. Flush – This poker hand features five cards of the same suit but in no particular sequence. For instance, you’ll have a flush with Q, 10, 8, 5, and 4 of hearts.
  • Three of a Kind – This hand contains three cards with the same rank and two others with different ranks, such as three Queens, eight, and four.
  • Two Pairs – The hand features a pair of cards in the same rank and another in a different rank, with a fifth unpaired card like K, K, 7, 7, 4.
  1. One Pair – This combination features only one pair of cards and three in different ranks like Q, Q, J, 4, 3.

How to Bet On Poker

In a poker game, there are more than one betting intervals where the players have the chance to wager on their hands. As such, players must master the skill of maximizing their winnings with good hands and reducing losses when dealt poor hands. However, every player must put an initial bet on the pot before the cards are dealt.

Following the first betting round, the players normally have the following betting options depending on the confidence they have on their hand:

  • Call – That means matching another player’s bet and raising the pot
  • Raise – Increasing your existing bet in a betting round
  • Fold – Withdrawing from the current hand and sacrificing any bets made
  • Check – Decline to make a wager while having the chance to wager later in the round.
  • All In – when you don’t have enough chips to call a bet, you can wager all your remaining chips. The subsequent betting takes to go in a separate pot, and you can only win the amount in the pot when you went all-in in the subsequent showdown.

Betting Rounds

Every poker betting round presents a chance to use the betting options outlined above according to the confidence you have in your hand and the perception of your opponents’ hands. You can judge your opponents’ hands by taking note of how they’re raising or betting. However, every poker variation features at least one betting round, although most of them feature at least two.
