All The Filming Locations In “Practical Magic 2”

Practical Magic 2 arrives just in time for the colder months, so grab your coziest blanket, warm up your favorite drink, and settle in to enjoy the film.

Are you the type of person who, once the leaves start falling and skies turn grey, grabs the coziest blanket and puts on a comforting film? Then chances are you are a Practical Magic lover, and feel a rush of nostalgia every time the two sisters appear on screen. This romantic fantasy film, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, became the quintessential autumn film after its release in 1998, back when cinema had that heartwarming effect. But if you already know the dialogue by heart and cannot listen to one more second of its soundtrack, then it might be time to go watch Practical Magic 2.

The movie picks up nearly thirty years after the original, with Sally and Gillian now older and leaving the central action to Sally’s witchy daughters, Kylie (Joey King) and Antonia (Maisie Williams.) When Kylie falls in love, she discovers that the Owens curse is, in fact, very real: the men the women truly love are inevitably destined to die. Before their fate is ultimately sealed, the family travels to England to uncover more about the origins of their magic and the history of their family.

The original Pacific Northwest locations are now traded for settings across Southern England, a very interesting decision which gives Practical Magic 2 a distinctly different atmosphere while retaining some of the charm and warmth which made the first film so beloved.

Of course, the Victorian-style Owens family home, where the sisters dance to Stevie Nicks’ songs, had to be brought back to life for the sequel. Fans will remember its whimsical interiors, which felt strangely familiar, always illuminated by candles and moonlight streaming through the windows.

Leavesden Studios were used in Practical Magic 2 to recreate the house, as the studio’s enormous facilities made it possible to build the entire building from scratch. According to Sandra Bullock, recreating the kitchen was the most complex, but also the most emotional, part of the process, as it was the heart and soul of the Owens residence.

The renowned garden was also reproduced, with over four thousand plants brought in. A great deal of time and attention to detail went into matching the interiors and exteriors of the first film, making it feel as though time had never passed within its rooms.

When Kylie heads to England in search of a way to save Gideon, the film explores a more ancestral English setting, introducing the old village of Thornfield. Surrounded by countryside, woodland, and historic buildings, it could not be more different from the coastal atmosphere of the first film.

The scenes set there were filmed in Hambleden, a picturesque Buckinghamshire village known for its brick-and-flint cottages and considered one of the country’s prettiest winter small towns. The historic St. Mary the Virgin Church stands at its centre, while trails through the Chiltern Hills provide the perfect setting for long countryside walks.

The fictional Thornfield Inn was actually filmed at The Royal Standard, a historic pub which has stood for more than nine hundred years and claims to be the oldest pub in the country. Its legacy rests on a long-cultivated tradition of sheltering wayfarers, with its motto reading: “Go in peace. Go Gently, Pilgrim.”

The modern world is left behind once the wooden doors are passed and one steps onto the medieval tiled floor. The smell of wood smoke, hops, and home-cooked food welcomes visitors, while the garden buzzes with life, filled with families and friends.

The rooms at Harvard University, as well as some of the movie’s English lodgings, were recreated at Langleybury Mansion, a vacant 18th-century manor house with beautifully preserved period interiors. Set at the heart of the Langleybury Estate, the mansion has been used as a filming location for the past decade, appearing in productions such as Downton Abbey, The Crown, and Paddington.
