As the leaves start to change and swimsuits are swapped for infinity scarves, everyone in the US is celebrating the start of fall. An activity that may not be on your bucket list but should be is visiting a winery. Wineries combine some of my favorite things: road trips, learning new things, and copious amounts of vino. Before moving to Texas, I thought I had to travel to California or France to whet my palate. I quickly learned that the Texas Hill Country, a mere 60 minutes from Austin, hosts some of the countries best wineries.

Nestled along a 45 mile stretch on Highway 290, between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, you will find more wineries than you can count. In fact, this is second most visited wine region in the US, second to only Napa. Featured in the likes of the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and a regular on HGTV you know you’re in for a treat. So this fall, grab your friends, pack up the car and head to the new Napa. Below you’ll find the must-see wineries this fall:

Hilmy Cellars

12346 Hwy 290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624, United States (map, website)

It’s cozy atmosphere will make you feel like you’re at a friends really nice home. Hilmy boasts a delicious Tempranillo and my favorite Hill Country wine. While visiting, participate in a tasting, $10 a person, or grab a glass and hang out on the back patio.Stepping outside you’ll have uninterrupted views of their vineyards and as a bonus the property is home to free roaming guinea hens, chickens, and goats. In cooler months they have blankets on hand to stay toasty warm.

Becker Vineyards

The big kahuna on the block, Becker Vineyards is a crowd favorite. The sprawling grounds offer everything from tours to tasting. Tastings here are $12 for 6 wines. Cozy up next to the open hearth in the tasting room and get in the spirit of fall.

Woodrose Winery

662 Woodrose Ln, Stonewall, TX 78671, United States (map, website)

The perk of Woodrose Winery is they offer table top service. There is no need to elbow your way at the bar to get the server’s attention. Instead, their tastings are brought to you and your crew. The tree lined back deck offers great views of autumn foliage.

After a day along wine road head to Fredericksburg for a good German meal. The quaint town is a hidden gem that offers everything from art galleries to biergartens. Visit in October and you might be their for their annual Oktoberfest. Prost!

Remember to be safe: hire a driver, sign-up for a tour, or designate a bestie as your driver.
