Whenever I think of Thanksgiving at my house, the first thing that always comes to mind is the stuffing.

Now I’m sure that everybody is convinced that they’ve grown up with the best family recipes, but I still think that this stuffing is the tastiest. Unfortunately, like most family recipes, there’s no exact recipe per se. I’ve just grown up watching my mother and grandmother make it each year. Nevertheless, I’m going to share what I know. Try it out this Thanksgiving—you won’t be disappointed!
- First prepare Albers cornbread (skip the sugar even though the recipe calls for it)
- Let cornbread cool and crumble into a large mixing bowl
- Next, crumble in approximately 3-4 slices of white bread
- Chop and add approx. 1 bunch of celery and one onion
- Stir in poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste
- Finally, mix in 2 beaten eggs and chicken broth to reach the desired moistness
Last but not least, enjoy! And remember, shhhh, it’s a family secret ;)

Thanksgiving is a holiday that is very traditionally American indeed. Though my family and I consider ourselves to be citizens of this great country, it’s still hard to let go of old habits. My family is originally from China, where New Years is the big holiday to pull out all the tricks for. So every November, we celebrate a holiday that can only be labeled as a Chinese Thanksgiving. Instead of turkey, we have duck, and instead of cornbread and cranberry dressing, we have dumplings and bok choy. However, though the food is different and our house lacks stickers of pilgrims and Native Americans, we still gather around with our intimate family friends and give thanks for everything that we have and have been able to achieve. At the end of the day, that’s what Thanksgiving is truly about: showing appreciation for the ones you love and the string of small “good things” in your daily life.
