5 Ways To Give Back This Thanksgiving (Or Any Occasion)

Thanksgiving reminds us to not only give thanks and appreciate the things we have, but also to give back.

As we anticipate the upcoming holidays and look forward to the feelings of cheer, abundance, and full bellies, sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in the things that are not truly at the heart of the season. Here are five ways to give back this year:

1. Donate to your local food bank.

While many of us are deciding how to stretch our stomachs and where to pass out for our food comas, it’s important not to forget that many people are struggling to find their next meals. Help prevent hunger by loading up on canned and non-perishable foods, and heading to a nearby food bank. Regular meals are something we all take for granted, so remember to give a big thanks for that as well.

2. Volunteer at a nearby soup kitchen.

This used to be one of my favorite things to do as a kid, as I felt like such a big adult when I got to help make heaping platefuls of food and serve them. Being an adult now, I hope to bring my own little sister to my local soup kitchen to help out and learn the fun in giving. Though the gesture is small, it can truly be impactful. Individuals are so grateful not just for their meals, but also for the time volunteers take to share a laugh or chat.

3. Visit a hospital or nursing home.

The holidays are meant to be spent with family, but for many, that isn’t an option. Imagine being alone for the holidays—that would really suck, wouldn’t it? Gather up a few friends and your younger siblings and craft some holiday art and cards to give away to hospital patients. Have a talent? Nursing homes love to have carolers and musicians play for their guests, who of course, love them even more!

4. Donate personal care items, clothing, and toys to a shelter.

In addition to food, there are many things that those without homes and families need. Our household basics like toothpaste and socks may seem like everyday and simple necessities, but not everyone has them or can afford them. In middle school, we used to have a sock drive where we filled new pairs of socks with necessities and cards to give. Come up with your own creative ways to give, your effort will be very much appreciated.

5. Open up your home.

Know any friends who aren’t going home for the holidays, or have a coworker who’ll be alone on the big day? Invite them to your place! You can’t possibly finish all that food your family has prepared. Like the saying goes, more truly is merrier.
