I pay attention, I get ready in time and gather every little information needed, even flipping through guide books in an old fashioned way. But in Sicily, that wasn’t enough. So let me prep you for the unexpected!
1. Transportation
Let’s start with transportation. Of course, everyone wants to choose the most comfortable possibilities. But in this case, you have to open your wallet. The easiest way getting to your chosen destinations is by taxi. I recommend getting in touch with Radiotaxi, they work with fine prices according to other European countries.
The other option is renting a car. The prices are fair and you will probably see much more from the island and don’t have to stick to the chaotic schedule of buses and trains. But watch out for those crazy drivers! The stereotype is true. Italians drive insanely!
It is possible to use public transport but the quality and frequency is poor. Therefore buses are crowded as well. Brace yourself for some hard times if you choose buses and calculate long waits to your vacation times. Don’t forget your book!
2. Stick to Sicilian time
Just like in every Mediterranean country, most businesses take a siesta and close after 1 p.m. until 4 – 5 p.m. Oh, and this is also true with public transport as well! Buses are less common at that time of the day. I recommend getting groceries in the morning, and spending siesta time at the beach. The cities start to buzz in the evening, leave sightseeing fun towards the end of the day.
3. Language
Learn as much Italian as you can! I was the kind of arrogant tourist I never wanted to be, thinking they would speak English since the big citiy of Sicily is a popular touristic destination. But I did a big mistake with this attitude. Get a translation app so you won’t feel so lost.
4. Beaches
If you want to discover hidden treasures that are less crowded, you might have to get out of town. Believe me, it’s well worth it. Don’t forget your diving goggles! You will see exciting creatures under the sea!
If you plan to go to the eastern part of Sicily, I recommend getting a pair of plastic shoes. The beaches are rather rocky in that part of the island.
Solo traveling? After my trip to Sicily, I wouldn’t recommend this area for solo travel , particularly if you are a beginner. My last tip? Expect the unexpected!
