Before embarking on any Eurail adventure, read these tips for a smoother ride!

5. There’s no security.
Unlike the airport, the European train systems don’t have security. This means that if you have a ticket (or your pass!), you can show up to the train station five minutes before your scheduled departure. Trains in Europe are almost always on time. If the schedule says that the train for Berlin is leaving at 14:30, then it probably won’t be there at 14:31. Don’t cut it too close – some train stations are massive and difficult to navigate.
4. Some trains require a reservation.
Unfortunately, Eurail and various European railway systems have not progressed to online reservations. You must go to the train station in person (with your Eurail pass and passport) to reserve your ticket if your trip requires it. The Eurail train schedule booklet, along with the Eurail trip planning website, provides information on this.
3. You might still be on the hook for supplementary charges.
Most high speed trains, especially in Western Europe (Spain, France, Belgium) and Scandinavia, require a supplementary fee to reserve your seat. Fees vary per company, but they can range anywhere between 3 and 35 Euros! Make sure you take this into consideration when making plans and budgeting your trip. If you’re not in a big hurry, try taking the local trains and spending some time in towns you wouldn’t normally think of visiting.

2. Not all trains are made the same.
Across Europe, rail systems vary greatly. Some train stations have every amenity, and convenience stores for things you could need, while others don’t even have a restroom. The same goes for the trains themselves – some cars are air-conditioned with clean bathrooms and dining cars. Don’t assume you will be in a reclining seat or be able to buy food onboard!
1. Read the directions.
This sounds simple, but take some time to go through all of the information Eurail sends you along with your pass. Having a complete understanding of the system will make it much easier to plan your future trips.
