Ever heard of an Eurail pass? Train travel is more than just a means to get from point A to point B; oftentimes, it’s a lifestyle.

If you’re someone who enjoys getting a feel for their surroundings by taking the scenic route, train travel may be the perfect mode of transportation for you. Make sure to check out these starting tips before booking your ticket!
1. Know whether or not to book a ticket.
Oftentimes, whether or not you should book a ticket in advance for your train depends on the type of traveler that you are. Because trains to some cities come so frequently, it is possible to show up to the train station and grab a ticket for the next train. The trick to this method is understanding the train lines that you are traveling. Some lines charge significantly more if you buy tickets at the station than if you buy them online. Some lines only have one or two trains that leave per day. Know your travel style and check the website beforehand.
2. Pay close attention to the direct trains versus the longer trains.
The high-speed trains in Europe are often in better condition and for a few euros more, can get you to your destination hours faster. The difference in lines is usually just one word so pay close attention to what your ticket says and what the side of the train says before you board.
3. Be wary of pick pockets (especially on night trains).
People who pick pocket for a living know the places where tourists and travelers are likely to be and one of these is at the train station and on the train. If you’re on a day trip and traveling with a light bag, you are usually less at-risk but traveling with a suitcase on a night train across Europe will require you to be more cautious. Try not to speak loudly in your native language if your native language is different than that of the region. It’s one thing to assume you’re not from the area; it’s another to know.
4. Keep good company.
Whether your preferred choice of company is one friend, four friends, or your travel playlist, make sure you’re well equipped for the long hours!
5. Finally, don’t be afraid to be spontaneous!
There are always trains and there will always be trains that are leaving from your destination. If your passing by a city that you want to see, don’t be afraid to get off the train for an hour, take some pictures, and then get back on the next one. Train travel allows you to see point A, point B, and everything in between so don’t be afraid to take advantage of it!
