Your vital checklist for attending Ultra, Miami’s biggest EDM beach party.

Fireworks and lights harmonized with an explosion in the music as Swedish House Mafia gave their final concert as a group at the second weekend of Ultra Music Festival’s 15th Anniversary. A Miami staple, UMF is characterized by vibrant fluorescent clothing, electrifying music and beach balls. Yet while this sun-kissed seaside party seems like the definition of spring break, it is important (as a traveler) to plan ahead before landing in Miami and fist pumping ‘till you drop. Follow this checklist, and you’ll have the weekend of a lifetime.

1. Book the hotel and flight in advance
Competing with over 150,000 party-goers is never easy, so book your hotels and flights the second you know you’re going or even the summer before. After dancing for twelve hours, you’ll want a hotel within short walking distance of the venue rather than having to look for transportation at midnight. Luckily there are a plethora of perfectly located hotels sprinkled all around the downtown, including the Intercontinental and the Hilton.
2. Fanny packs and Camelbacks
The Ultra wardrobe is centered around one word: simple. While going all out with makeup or neon clothes is a must, keeping the layers and bags to a minimum is crucial for surviving a full day of dancing and jumping in the sun and in large crowds. Fanny packs are a perfect way to keep your belongings at arms reach and in sight at all times. They are also light and come in all kinds of funky colors that can match your outfits to a tee. Camelbacks are great for staying hydrated and not having to lose your spot in the crowd to purchase water every few hours. Trust me: you will be thirsty.

3. Pack your bathing suit
And no, this is not just for the beach. A common Ultra trend involves wearing your bathing suit under (or as) your Ultra outfit and stripping down to it when the heat gets tough. Plus, you can keep it on for a late night pool party at a nearby hotel after the festival.
4. Make a schedule
As an EDM fan, I’ve learned that making a schedule is vital for squeezing in all of my favorite DJ’s. Although there may be some unavoidable conflicts, a schedule will ensure that you see the maximum number of performances possible. For this, use the Ultra Music Festival smartphone application or do it the old-fashioned way and write or type it out as soon as the lineup is released.
5. Bring your flag!
There’s nothing like the feeling of sitting on someone’s shoulders above the crowd and waving the flag of your favorite or home country as the DJ drops your favorite tune. While my home country of Venezuela is largely represented at Ultra, I have taken to bringing my Hong Kong flag to support the home of my high school years. So for all you jet setting travelers out there, don’t forget to tote your flags and show off your national pride.
