As a little girl, my favorite place to travel to was not Hong Kong or Istanbul—it was the bookstore. It was a place where I could travel without leaving the country, where I could escape into a number of worlds in a matter of seconds. I’d always prefer the smell of a freshly opened novel than the flashy and psychedelic appeal of a toy store. Nothing felt better than leaving a bookstore toting a little bag with my newly purchased book, even when I was two years old and still needed someone to read it to me. To be honest, I haven’t changed much in that regard. Walking around DuPont Circle during my recent weeks in Washington DC, the first shop that caught my eye was Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café and Grill.

The store has the cozy ambiance that makes you want to curl up with a hot chocolate and pop open the first book you can find. There’s a variety of novels lining the walls, piled on each other, and squeezed into every nook and cranny of the store. The assortment is ideal, with recent bestsellers that you might find at Barnes and Noble as well as more obscure, artsier selections. It’s the kind of store where you struggle to leave without a book due to the range of genres and titles.

But what stands out about this bookstore is not just its cinematic and aesthetically pleasing vibe, it’s the extension it has towards the back. While most bookstores nowadays have a café for their customers, Kramerbooks has Afterwords Café and Grill, which is not only a café and a grill, but also a bar. The feeling of sipping on a Hot Buttered Rum as you’re glancing up into a bookstore is something that my nerdy inner self could not appreciate any more. It provides one of the most distinct juxtapositions for a venue that I’ve ever encountered, while managing to be warm and relaxing. If you’re ever in DC and need a place to catch up with a friend, hop on your laptop and get some work done, or simply enjoy a drink at an unconventional (and somewhat hipster/highly Instagram-able) spot, be sure to stop by Kramerbooks & Afterwords Café and Grill—surely you’ll leave toting a newly purchased book of your own.
