Leisurely Lunches & Daily Siestas In Madrid

Full time schedules in Madrid can still manage to include leisurely lunches and daily siestas.

After a summer in the busiest of hectic cities, my past few weeks have felt like its antithesis. Madrid’s slow, steady tempo and siestas provide a nice balance to New York City’s bustling streets and perpetual lights. There is a sense here that time trickles by instead of running away and that strangers are friends, not obstacles to navigate.

I sat down for a late lunch yesterday near the river, which runs through the south of the city, the social and economic center. The pace of the people strolling through cobble-stoned streets matched the rhythm of the winding river. It took at least fifteen minutes for our waiter to notice that we had sat down and to saunter over to our table with menus. We ordered some red wine and began looking over tapas in the meantime.

Wine rarely appears in the middle of a New York City work day, but Friday is rarely a workday in Spain. Fridays here marks the start of the weekend but lately I’ve had trouble even telling the weekend apart from the week. Workers have been trickling back into the city after their August vacations and it seems they haven’t settled back into their full-time schedules. Though I wonder, sipping my second glass of wine and still waiting to order some food, how full time schedules in Madrid can still manage to include leisurely lunches and daily siestas (nap time.)

As much as I dreaded facing the crowded subways of New York, there was a sense of energy I picked up from the air that I have not yet found in Madrid. But it’s undeniable that there is a different type of energy, floating around and that it’s begun to settle into me. It’s a little more leisurely: it took two hours to finish lunch and after heading home , I, too, took a nap.
