Zaisan Monument offers a breathtaking view of the city, along with a vibrant mural which bonds two neighboring countries.

Built in 1956, Zaisan Monument is perched on top of Ulaanbataar’s southern region. The memorial honors both Mongolian and Soviet soldiers that were killed during World War II.
After hiking up 300 steps of stairs (612 steps from the base of the hill,) visitors can admire a massive circular painting illustrating a series of historical events that encapsulate a longstanding friendship between two countries: Soviet’s support for Mongolia’s declaration of independence in 1921, Soviets defeating the Japanese Kwantung Army in 1939at Khalhkin Gol on the Mongolian border, winning against Nazi Germany and the flight of Soyuz 39 which included Jugderdemidiin Gurragchaa – the first Mongolian into space.

The monument also encompasses the panoramic view of the entire city, not to mention, Tuul River flowing across. Local Mongolians often stop by Zaisan during school field trips or celebrating graduations. The surrounding area is currently developing into luxury housing for local residence.
