Museo Archeologico Nazionale Di Sperlonga

Via Flacca, km 16,300, 04029 Sperlonga LT, Italy

The National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga contains the city’s rich history for €5. Many of Sperlonga villas were built during the Roman empire, the most famous being the imperial summer villa built by Emperor Tiberius. Emperor Tiberius’ cave, The Tiberius’ Grotto, is a must-see in Sperlonga. The remaining ruins of the Tiberius Villa connects to the National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga. For Greek mythology lovers, sculptures within the Nazionale di Sperlonga are inspired by Homer’s The Odyssey. The museum holds marble statues reenacting episodes of the Greek poem: The Assault of Scylla, The Palladio Rape, The Blinding of Cyclops Polyphemus, and Odysseus Who Raises the Dead Achilles. Two hours of your day trip will be enough to see all the paintings, sculptures, artifacts, and Emperor Tiberius’ cave.

Torre Truglia

Via Torre Truglia, 04029 Sperlonga LT, Italy

A can’t miss in Sperlonga is the Torre Truglia located right below the old towns center on top of the hill near the sea. This cream-colored, square-squat pinnacle is the symbol of Sperlonga and its people. In the earlier days, Torre Truglia functioned as a department for the Guardia di Finanza (Finance police.) The tower was known to protect Sperlonga from pirate raids and Saracen incursions. Torre Truglia rests above the sea with views hovering above the shore’s sandy beaches and the town with peaking mountains behind, it is the perfect Instagram-worthy shot.

Stop by Donna Assunta a Sperlonga for a quick lunch break in the heart of town. This restaurant has authentic Italian cuisines from pasta, to pizza, and Mediterranean dishes. I recommend the penne pasta with red sauce for €8. For my vegetarians, the restaurant will happily accommodate to make a meal suitable for you upon request. Donna Assunta a Sperlonga not only has drool dripping cuisines but also an exquisite list of drinks from wine to fruity spritzers. The portion sizes are full-filling, and the drinks are as refreshing as the ocean breeze.

Sperlonga, despite being well-known in the country, the town is not known by many travelers. The coastal town is a hidden gem away from the touristy spots and the loudness of the cities. A day trip to Sperlonga was much needed during my stay in Rome. The beauty in Sperlonga is indescribable and being able to enjoy freeness of doing nothing was the most memorable part of my stay in Italy. As the Italians say “Dolce far niente”, meaning “the sweetness of doing nothing”. Sperlonga is the epitome of dolce far niente.
