You’ll want to pinch yourself to prove you’re not dreaming.

It’s hard to think of a place more magical than the Amalfi Coast, the famous stretch of coastline in southern Italy. It’s the kind of place that seems so postcard-picture-perfect that it couldn’t possibly that beautiful, but I can assure you it’s even more stunning in real life. While the Amalfi Coast consists of many gorgeous cities, Positano is home to some of the most iconic views in all of Italy. You’ll want to pinch yourself to prove you’re not dreaming when you see the glistening, bright blue water beneath cliffs boasting adorable, multicolored buildings surrounded by lush greenery. The city’s can’t-miss panini spot is just an added bonus. It’s impossible not to have a perfect day in Positano, and here are the reasons why:

1. The panoramic views you’ll take in from the hillside will blow you away.

Whether you’re driving along the winding roads or walking in the hills, you’ll be amazed by the heavenly views of the expansive ocean beneath you. Even fog can’t diminish the beauty, because the water still continues to sparkle. The fact that so much of the hillsides have been left undeveloped is something to be thankful for, because it’s really special to see so much fantastically dense greenery on the coast.

2. The tiny streets have that quaint, quintessentially southern Italian vibe.

With too many cute little shops and delicious, seafood-centric restaurants to count, you could easily spend hours simply roaming the winding, sun-drenched streets. You’ll find everything from classic Italian ceramics to fantastic clothes to complete your southern Italian look, and you’ll have wonderfully colorful buildings to admire at every turn! And don’t forget to look up, because you’ll likely see a canopy of vines and flowers, which look even more breathtaking against the vivid blue of the sky.

3. You’ll never get tired of admiring those iconic colorful stacked buildings.

Where else will you find a hillside made up of candy-colored buildings stacked intricately atop one another? This is the kind of sight you won’t want to stop taking pictures of, and the fact that you can snap those photos from the comfort of a lounge chair on the beach makes it even better.

4. Panini. Period.

While in Positano, you must be sure to stop at Vini & Panini (Via di Saracino, 31), which is commonly referred to as the home of the “second best panini in Italy” (beaten only by the panini at All’antico Vinaio in Florence). Word-of-mouth award-winning or not, this place sure offers an amazing, fresh panini, along with everything else you would hope to find in a convenience store. Its close proximity to the sand makes this the perfect place to stop to grab a panini before heading to the beach for a day in the sun.

5. You can sunbathe on the beach or swim in the crystal clear ocean—or both!

The colorful and often lively beach is a great place to bask in the sun, but you’ll want to be sure to also take a dip in the vibrant blue water. While swimming, you can look back at the city for a view like no other, and you’ll realize that there really is only one word that describes Positano best: perfect.
