5 Florence Gelateria’s To Add To Your Dessert Bucket List

Gelato. The Italian version of ice cream that’s richer, creamier and more delicious than anything Ben and Jerry’s could ever produce.

It completely ruins you for any ice cream you have after you’ve left. With Florence being the birthplace of gelato you know there are bound to be lots of fabulous gelateria’s to help curb your sweet tooth. Below we’ve listed five tried-and-true places that should not be missed while visiting the beautiful city of Firenze.

Located only a few steps away from both the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio, Venchi is a bit of a tourist trap, but don’t let that fool you. It offers a huge selection of gourmet chocolate, as it’s first and foremost a chocolate shop, but it’s real draw is it’s amazing gelato. They have a broad range of flavors, both original and slightly out of the box, but all are decadent and absolutely delicious. We recommend trying the Cremino flavor if you like chocolate and hazelnut (think nutella in gelato form), or if you’re feeling fruity their mango is to die for. Did we mention they also have a wall that doubles as a chocolate fountain? Enough said.

Beyoncé came here when she visited Florence so you KNOW this place is bangin’. It’s located right next to the Duomo so you can snap tons of artsy pictures, and while that means there will definitely be lines when you go, it’s 100% worth the wait. Make sure to grab a number when you get there, as their shop isn’t big enough to accommodate a lot of people so they call up people “deli-counter” style. They pride themselves on fresh and organic ingredients, and they sometimes offer gluten-free flavors! Between their freshly made waffle cones and unique flavors like honey lavender and white wine you won’t find a gelateria like this anywhere else.

Gelateria La Carraia (1&2)

There are two La Carraia’s in the city (the one on Via de’ Benci tends to be less crowded, but doesn’t have as great a view), and boy do they deliver when it comes to amazing gelato for super cheap. You can get one scoop of gelato for one. freaking. euro. and it’s not cheap tasting gelato either. They have three cases full of different flavors, so you’re bound to find something you’ll like. If you like nutella (I mean who doesn’t?) try their yogurt and nutella flavor. The mix of the tart yogurt and the sweet nutella is a combination you never knew you needed. Just be careful, it’s easy to get addicted. Tons of people voted this as the best gelato in Florence so it’s definitely worth a visit and you can decide for yourself if it’s the best gelato you’ve ever had.

Gelateria Santa Trinita

This gelateria is located at the base of Ponte Santa Trinita, one bridge over from the Ponte Vecchio (if you don’t know, the Ponte Vecchio is the most famous bridge in Florence). Hence, once you get your silky smooth, heavenly tasting gelato, just walk to the bridge for a fantastic photo op. They are known for their more unusual flavors, like sesame nero (a must-try) and mascarpone vanilla. The staff is super friendly and can answer any and all questions about the different flavors they offer, or give recommendations. If you’re in the mood for some vino while there, they also offer a selection of wines you can purchase, as well as some pastas, sauces and spreads.

Gelateria Dei Neri

Just a few minutes from the Uffizi gallery, this gelateria offers so much more than just gelato. If you’re all gelato-ed out, try their granita (similar to Italian ice) or semifreddo (think frozen mousse.) They also sometimes have an assortment of other desserts like tarts and cakes. They have a semi-spacious seating area, unlike most of the other gelaterias, which is great when it’s not too crowded. Whether you want to play it safe, or be bold with your flavors, you’ll find something to your liking. The salted caramel and ricotta fig flavors are the most popular and definitely worth a try.
