The iconic German tourist site, Neuschwanstein, garners tour groups, young lovebirds, and eager families.

Neuschwanstein is the real Disney castle. Erected against the picturesque landscape of gorgeous mountains, pun intended, and lush greenery, the castle is indeed magical. The interior, though unfinished, glistens with elegance. Intricately carved furniture decorate King Ludwig’s chamber while Byzantine designs furnish the throne room.

As beautiful and extravagant as the castle is, the real gem and the real fairy tale adventure are not found within the painted walls but rather outside of the castle. The sound of water running in the distance and leaves rustling in the wind invites the curious, the nature-lover, the hiker and the adventurous to take the road less traveled.
Instead of taking a horse-drawn carriage up the mountain to the castle or paying a Euro for a bus ride down to civilization, why not make your own path through the forest? I did, and it was incredible; I slid down slimy rocks, was trapped by fallen tree trunks and encountered unwelcoming wildlife. By hiking the road less, or even never, traveled, I found my way and a hidden gem; I made my own tale. After all, I did overcome many obstacles to reach my final destination; if only I were greeted by Prince Charming, my fairy tale would be complete.
Sure, the castle is quite magical in and of itself; however, straying from mainstream and being a little individualistic, Neuschwanstein Castle, the stereotypical German tourist destination, truly becomes a personal experience, and not just another item crossed off of one’s bucket list. Following the masses is utterly boring and quite uneventful. Take time to create your own paths; perhaps, you may find your own hidden gem and develop your own tale.
