A More Challenging Side Of The Great Wall

The Great Wall can be a challenging hike and campsite. Go past the most popular sites of the wall (perhaps another hour drive) and you can take a cable car up to mountains to a more isolated piece of the wall.

It’s arguably China’s most well-known monument. Tourists from all over China and the rest of the world flock there to look at a piece of history. There are different sections of the wall that can be seen. Some are restored and regularly kept up by the government, while others are no more than a few feet of stone due to wear and tear of the China terrain.

The wall, however, can be more than just a sight for pictures. If one should so desire, he or she can escape the crowds and truly go on an adventure. It can be a challenging hike and campsite. Go past the most popular sites of the wall (perhaps another hour drive) and you can take a cable car up to mountains to a more isolated piece of the wall. From there, you hike. Most people don’t realize that parts of the wall are immensely steep and challenging to the point where you are holding on to the sides trying not to fall. The farther it continues, the less people there are. It becomes more and more beautiful the farther out you get, until there is nothing but you, the stone, and green mountains. If one is feeling even more adventurous, it is possible to camp out on the wall.

Although it is extremely difficult to hike in the summer heat of China, I assure you it is worth it. The views were amazing. Being one of the few people on the wall deeply connects you to nature and history. Imagine what must have happened right where you were standing. And best of all, there will be no pushy tourists crowding the views. I recommend the hiking part, perhaps even the camping. Bring a snack, sunscreen, and water. Charge your camera and get ready to experience a different, more challenging side of the iconic landmark.
