What is Chez Janou famous for?

In the heart of the third arrondissement in Paris is Chez Janou, popular among celebrities and influencers so I had to come and check it out for myself.

The interior resembles Southern France’s vibrant colors and eclectic decor, while the food is all about Provençale flavors. Of course, it’s known for the epic chocolate mousse but we’ll get to it later. The bar carries more than 80 kinds of pastis, predominantly produced in the South of France, a strong, anise-flavored spirit and aperitif. But on this day, we opted for a lovely white Côte du Rhône, that carried citrus flavors with white flowers, a hint of honey and spice.

For lunch, I got a tasty Magret de Canard. Usually, when I’m eating out in France, I like to go for darker meats because I don’t cook that at home and French restaurants simply do them so well. In this case, the duck breast is from a Moulard duck raised specifically for foie gras, so it carries an almost beefy flavor. Quite dark and rich.

Of course, we couldn’t pass up Chez Janou’s iconic mousse au chocolat for dessert which comes in a massive jar, a giant spoonful served at the table. Creamy, rich, nutty, yet incredibly fluffy that spoonfuls are magically consumed and disappears before I even knew it! Definitely lives up to the hype! Before the meal ended, the bar gifted shots of Joseph Cartron melon liqueur made in Burgundy known for beautiful wines and fruit brandies. Reservation is needed, if not, come here right when the restaurant opens. Definitely worth coming back here again!
