Barcelona has no shortage of cocktail bars, but some of its most inviting drinking spots are tucked inside the city’s historic hotels. Batuar Restaurant & Bar, located within the Cotton House Hotel in the Eixample district, offers a more relaxed way to experience Barcelona’s cocktail scene, combining an elegant setting with a menu that embraces seasonal ingredients and creative mixology.

Whether travelers are looking for an afternoon aperitif, a pre-dinner drink, or somewhere to linger over cocktails after a day exploring the city; Batuar makes a compelling case for stepping inside one of Barcelona’s most beautiful hotels. Alberto Melis, Bar Manager, sat down with us to unveil the stories behind the cocktails in a historic institution.

A Cocktail Bar Rooted in Barcelona’s Textile Heritage

The setting is part of Batuar’s appeal. Housed inside the Cotton House Hotel, a property whose identity pays tribute to Barcelona’s textile industry, the bar draws on the building’s history, as Melis explained:

“Originally, it was the residence of the family who owned the building. Then, they sold it to Catalonian Cotton Trader Association. When they closed the deal, they renovated the building, built the sixth floor and opened the hotel in 2015. That’s why it’s called Cotton House Hotel.”

The name batuar refers to a machine used to process cotton and remove impurities, connecting the bar to the city’s industrial past. Today, that heritage provides a distinctive backdrop for a contemporary hospitality experience.

Located on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, the hotel’s refined interiors offer a sense of old-world character, making Batuar a natural choice for visitors that appreciate places where architecture and history are part of the experience.

Signature Cocktails and Creative Mixology

At Batuar, cocktails are central to the experience. The menu combines signature creations with an approach to mixology that embraces seasonal ingredients and inventive techniques.

Rather than relying solely on familiar classics, the cocktail program encourages guests to explore different flavor combinations. Fresh citrus, aromatic herbs, fruit, and carefully selected spirits can bring contrasting elements of sweetness, acidity, and bitterness into balance. There are two cocktails that are particularly interesting, especially The Fresh, as Melis noted,

“It’s a twist on Gin Basils Smash. We changed the gin to Singani 63 – a brandy from Bolivia with a nice citrus flavor. Then we add Italicus, the bergamot liquor with lime and sugar. We shake everything with fresh basil leaf, with yuzu and lemongrass sorbet. The garnish is a fried basil leaf, with yuzu spherification.”

When the garnish is eaten first, the yuzu facilitates with cleansing of the mouth. In addition, the plants and ingredients utilized in Batuar’s cocktails arrive from a farm not too far away.

The result is an experience suited to both cocktail enthusiasts looking for something unexpected and travelers who simply want a well-made drink in a stylish setting.

A Leafy Terrace in the Heart of Eixample

One of Batuar’s most appealing features is its terrace, a green-filled courtyard which offers a welcome change of pace from the movement and traffic of central Barcelona. Melis remarked,

“The idea is to create a little oasis inside the city. We work a lot with natural light, the plants, and the green parts are very important to create a space that is elegant but chill, where people can relax.”

Surrounded by greenery, the outdoor space feels removed from the busy streets beyond the hotel. It is an inviting setting for an afternoon drink, a leisurely catch-up with friends, or an aperitif before dinner.

The terrace also lends itself to Barcelona’s outdoor dining culture, where a drink is rarely just a quick stop but an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.

For travelers staying in Eixample, Batuar provides a convenient place to unwind without having to venture far from the neighborhood’s shopping streets, architecture, and restaurants.

More Than a Hotel Bar

Although Batuar is part of a luxury hotel, it is designed to welcome visitors as well as hotel guests. That makes it an appealing option for anyone exploring Barcelona’s hospitality scene beyond the independent cocktail bars and bustling nightlife districts.

The restaurant also serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with international influences, emphasizing local products and seasonal ingredients. Guests can pair their drinks with a meal or settle in for a longer visit that moves from cocktails to dinner.
