If you’re an expat living in Taipei, at some point, you’ll be craving for a good slice of home. For many, that’s specifically California cuisine. Breakfast Burrito, Tex-Mex Omelet, Waffle Burger, BBQ Buffalo Wings are just a few nostalgic dishes that will fulfill any foodie’s homesickness. And let’s not forget, each plate is luscious and flavorful at Corner Office, an American-style restaurant situated in the trendy East District.

Doan Bui is the man behind several delicious yet innovative establishments in Taipei. Besides Corner Office (which, for beer lovers, features an array of global brews you can rarely find in Taipei,) Bui is also a partner of a yakitori restaurant Shochu, Al Cicchetto (Song Yen location) and Bistro Taipei.

Bui’s restaurants all have one theme in common: stylishly cool. He personally devotes immense personal touch upon interior design, a detailed collaboration with his business partner Jerry Wang. Whether it’s an industrial but cozy vibe at Corner Office or rustic rock ‘n’ roll setting at Shochu, Bui’s collection of restaurants all feature delectable menus with unique assemblage of alcohol which adequately reflects upon a California-native who knows his tasteful drinks.

For a man who knows all about food and drinks in Taipei, we had to ask where his top 5 favorite eateries are in a city always welcoming newcomers. And now, here in his own words…

1. Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐

110, Taiwan, Taipei City, Xinyi District, City Hall Rd, No. 45, basement floor of Taipei 101 (map, website)

Although the restaurant brand has expanded into many chain stores globally however, I still think the original Din Tai Fung taste better here in Taipei.

2. Night Market Food  夜市

Taipei night market eateries is a must!  So many selections and they’re all so tasty!  Shilin Night Market would be the most tourist friendly as most vendors can comprehend some basic English.

3. Qiaotou Spicy Hot Pot 橋頭麻辣鍋

106, Taiwan, Taipei City, Da’an District, Section 1, Dunhua S Rd, No. 157, 2 floor (map)

Qiaotou Spicy Hot Pot is one of my favorite spicy hot pot (ma la) in Taipei.  This restaurant only has one location and they’re only open for dinner and closed very late everyday.  This is a favorite among locals which is always a good sign.

4. Aquatic Addiction 上引水產

No. 18, Alley 2, Lane 410, Mínzú East Rd, Zhongshan District Taipei City, 104 (map, website)

Aquatic Addiction is one of the best place for seafood in Taipei.  They have a fish market attached to their facilities along with a standing sushi bar.  You definitely can taste the quality and the freshness of the seafood.

5. Ice Monster

No. 297, Section 4, Zhongxiao E Rd, Da’an District, Taipei City, Taiwan 106 (map, website)

Ice Monster is one of the most famous in Taipei for shaved ice dessert.  They have some of the best selections of toppings and flavors.  Their mango shaved ice is their signature and most customers are hooked after their first bite.  Get there early if possible or else you’ll be in cue in line up to an hour.
