Whatever your reason for traveling by yourself.

According to a report by ABTA on Holiday Habits, the UK’s largest travel association, nearly one in six travelers vacation alone. This might sound surprising, but there are many reasons why people travel solo. There are various types of travelers, from spiritual seekers looking to find themselves to the adventurist type simply looking for something different, or the business traveler who is looking to add some leisure time into their business trips. Whatever your reason for traveling by yourself, here are five adventurous places to travel to in 2017!
1. Cuba
Traveling alone encourages you to open your eyes and really take in your surroundings. This is why it’s a good idea to travel somewhere that excites your senses – like Cuba. Home to gently dilapidating colonial buildings, shiny retro cars, salsa dancing and cigars, Cuba is an intoxicating destination. Whether you’re exploring the winding streets of Old Havana, relaxing on a golden beach, or venturing into the fertile landscapes of the Viñales Valley, you’re sure to be swept up by the lavish spirit of the Cuban people and their colorful country.
2. Scotland
Scotland is famous for its welcoming atmosphere, historic castles, whisky distilleries and golf courses. Whether you’re exploring the raw and rugged scenery of the Highlands or strolling around the country’s historic capital, Edinburgh, Scotland is a great adventure for solo travelers. Travel at New Year and you will be able to take part in the country’s famous Hogmanay celebrations. Edinburgh is the most famous location for this big party, where you’ll be able to share in a whole nation’s good spirits.
3. Kenya
One of the most adventurous holidays you can go on is a big game safari tour in Africa – many solo travelers say that this is one of the best traveling experiences they’ve ever had. Kenya’s diverse ecosystem makes it one of the best places to see the ‘big five’ (lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino and leopard). Group tours are widely available, where you can meet and team up with like-minded people.
4. Greece
Solo cruises are a fantastic way to travel on your own. You get to see a range of destinations, stay in a stylish cabin, and meet other people in a relaxed and friendly environment. Forget big ocean liners and take a smaller boat instead to island-hop around Greece. Visiting islands like Crete, Rhodes and Santorini, you’ll encounter sunshine, beaches, and a wide range of historic landmarks. Santorini, for example, is home to the ancient city of Akrotiri that was buried by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Some scholars believe it may have been the site of the famous city of Atlantis.
5. Rio de Janeiro
Many solo travelers gravitate towards South America for a truly exotic trip. Rio de Janeiro is the gateway city for many adventurists, and it is a stunning place in its own right. Experience spellbinding views of the Brazilian coastline from Sugarloaf Mountain, where the epic Statue of Christ the Redeemer stands tall. In the downtown area there are many historic buildings and museums to explore (it is usually best to find a group of people to explore with if you can). Don’t leave the city without going to the beach – Ipanema and Copacabana are world famous!
Don’t be afraid to go solo, it could be the best decision you ever made!
