The first time I came to Thailand, I was 8 years old. I barely remember that trip. The second time I visited Thailand again, I was around 13. This time, I remembered much more: the food, the temples where I learned for the first time you need to cover up (shorts don’t rule!) and the shopping! We bought lots of cheap, platform wedges. It was the 90’s. During the same trip, my family and I also visited Chiang Mai, during a time when the city was yet to be popularized by tourists. I spent afternoons reading “Like Water For Chocolate” under banana leaves and breakfasts were brought to us by ladies who arrived by boats.

Today, Thailand is a popular getaway for all ages, races and ethnicities. The food is mouthwatering (imagine every dish containing all four flavors, aka, the 4 S’s: spicy, salty, sweet and sour.) As Bangkok and Thai islands welcome millions of tourists annually, its amenities have also become more fully equipped and well-rounded. I went back to Bangkok again a few weeks ago, and I believe the city grew up just as fast as I did.
