I first became fascinated with nail art in gel when I lived in Tokyo around 2007.
Hate to break the news! The newest trend in fashion these days are no longer Chanel’s quilted handbags. As the prices keep soaring, not one girl with a regular 9-5 salary is able to afford a $3,000 accessory (hello, Rent the Runway!) So nail art in gel has been the new fashion statement, it’s glamorous and affordable. Plus, you can keep it just long enough until you become sick and tired of whatever you had on then easily move on to the next big design.
I first became fascinated with nail art in gel when I lived in Tokyo around 2007. My friend Mayuka always had the most elaborate manicure, the designs would change according to her plans. Once she was prepping for a trip to Hawaii with her boyfriend, and her nails were gel-ed in ocean blue with orchids and seashells on them. That did it, I had to try gel myself! She helped me book an appointment with her manicurist. After an hour, I had dried flowers on top of pale pink nails. They were gorgeous and lasted until I left Tokyo a month later.
Nail art in gel has always been more popular in Asia, it’s only until recently the trend is sweeping throughout the United States. The key to finding a place that does great nails is knowing an artist who listens to you well. Thankfully, my sister and I found the perfect nail salon in Taipei. For any Taipei local or anyone traveling to Taiwan, you must put a manicure session on your itinerary at Cherry Nails.
Launched nine year ago, Cherry Nails is a sister act at best. Cherry and Kiki’s salon is tucked in the basement floor of Dinghao Shopping Center (頂好名店城) in Eastern District of dowtown Taipei. The two sisters are masters at what they do by creating designs that fit into the lifestyles of their clients. Working at a bank and can’t afford to have crazy nail designs in the office but you still dream to have subtle bedazzled nails? Dream no more, Cherry and Kiki have got you covered.
“Right now, sweater print is wildly popular.” Cherry explains. So she and I selected 11 designs that are sublimely fitting for Spring. Pastels, yellows, even black lace with pale pink base is beautifully ideal for the powdered season. Cherry also included a few variations of sweater prints that are appropriate for the office and still exude fun.
Two weeks ago, I walked into Cherry’s salon and didn’t have an idea of what I wanted. So I asked her to create a design on her own. She came up with one of my favorites thus far, I immediately named it “Sparkling XOXO” as it’s how I feel about life of jetset these days!
