If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo or even Osaka…
When people think of Japan, most will automatically think of Tokyo – the city of lights that never sleeps. Of course, there is a historic side of Japan as well that is equally as wanderlust-worthy. Kyoto, the previous capital of Japan, attracts many tourists each year. Travelers want a glimpse of century-old, gorgeous temples and shrines that provide a good look into the city’s tradition, religion, and culture. The O-Bon Festivalis held in Kyoto during August every year, honoring the soul of one’s ancestors.
Having only traveled to Tokyo before going to Kyoto several years later, I thought Japan was only about Mount Fuji, Japanese anime, and the latest electronic gadgets. I was pleasantly surprised to find such tranquil atmosphere in Kyoto’s temples and shrines. When walking down old historic towns, it was almost like a walk in time. A total of 17 UNESCO Heritage Sites exist in Kyoto, almost a guarantee that you’ll be temple’d out by packing them all in a few days. If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo or even Osaka, Kyoto offers a different view into the Japanese zen culture.
