Spritz Life: Discovering Venice’s Most Popular Drink

Have a nice talk, then leave and in another couple of hours sit down to enjoy another Spritz.

When I ventured to Venice and met up with a local Venetian friend I knew from the States, I was introduced to the drink, “Spritz” – a cocktail that contains Prosecco wine with a dash of either Aperol, Campari, Select, or Cynar and mineral water and served with a slice of an orange and sometimes a green olive. The cocktail originated in Venice, but can be found in many cities throughout Italy. However, my Venetian friend bragged that nowhere else in the world, even other cities in Italy, had Spritzes that tasted as good as in Venice.

We had our refreshing Spritzes in the early afternoon after a tiring day of walking. Since I don’t usually have a drink in the middle of the day, I asked my friend if this was customary. He replied by saying that people in Venice will sit down for a Spritz, have a nice talk, then leave and in another couple of hours sit down to enjoy another Spritz. He described it as a way of life, something completely different from my drinking habits back home. I can’t wait to return to Venice and have a refreshing, orange Spritz!
