You can always hop on a flight with your family if you want to take a vacation. However, you may also prefer driving. If you do, you’re taking part in an activity called the Great American Road Trip.

You should consider several other reasons why taking a car trip with your family makes sense. We’ll discuss them in detail right now.
You Can Give Your Teens a Chance to Drive
Maybe you want to take a road trip with your family instead of flying because you have a teenager who’s going to try to get their driver’s license soon. They have a learner’s permit, but you feel that they need some practice time on the highway.
You can show them about maintaining a safe distance from the car in front of you when you’re behind the wheel. You can show them how to safely merge into a new lane of traffic on the highway or how to steer clear of the huge 18-wheelers that drive freight from one side of the country to the other.
When they feel ready, you can let them take over. You can encourage them as they drive in different traffic patterns and situations.
You can let them know you’re proud of them and that you feel like they’re ready to take the test. That represents a gigantic step in any child’s life, and you want to let your teen know you’re their biggest cheerleader.
You’re Continuing a Tradition You Might Remember from Childhood
You might want to go on a road trip with your family because when you do, you’re continuing a tradition that you might remember from your own childhood. Maybe you and your parents and siblings used to drive to Miami to spend time on the beach or to a national park so that you could camp.
You might remember the toys that you brought with you to play with in the car or the books you brought with you to read. Perhaps you recall the restaurant chain where you used to eat that now no longer exists.
It can bring on a nostalgic feeling to now take a similar trip with your own family. Now, you’re in the role of the parent, and you have kids of your own with the same hopes and dreams that you once did.
You Can Visit Family Members You Haven’t Seen in a While
The Great American Road Trip also remains an enduring activity because you can use it as an excuse to go visit family members you have not seen in a long time. Perhaps you have a beloved aunt or uncle who’s getting up there in years. Maybe you have some cousins who live in a city a few states over, and you seldom see them much anymore.
You can reconnect with your relatives and feel glad to do so. If they have some new kids or grandkids you haven’t met before, then you can do that.
They should feel pleased to see you. You can spend some time catching each other up with what’s going on in your respective lives. They can show you everything they did to fix up the house, or maybe they’ll cook you and your family a special meal.
You Can Catch Up with Your Immediate Family Members
You might also regard the Great American Road Trip as a special activity you can do with your family because you can catch up with your spouse, kids, or anyone else with whom you live. While you may feel close with relatives in other cities with whom you communicate on social media or on the phone, you should still try to cultivate a special relationship with all of your immediate family members.
It’s true that you and these individuals presumably see each other all the time. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you know everything that’s happening in each other’s lives.
You can have long conversations while you’re in the car together. You might ask your kids how they’re doing at school and get more than a one or two-word answer like you would at home. You can probe a little deeper and ask them if they’re thinking about going to college and what they might pursue as a major.
You might have more in-depth conversations with your partner or spouse as well. You likely see them daily, but maybe you don’t get the chance to speak as much as you’d like.
Now, you’re in the car together for hours. It’s a great opportunity to take the relationship’s temperature. If you’ve felt like you’re not connecting with your immediate family members as much as you would like, now, you will have that chance.
You Can Give Everyone a Chance to Pick an Activity
You might have one additional reason for wanting to take the Great American Road Trip with your immediate family members. You can let them know that you appreciate and value each one of them by telling them that they can pick an activity.
You can tell them that no matter what they most want to do, then you can do it, if it’s within your power. Maybe you have a child who loves dinosaurs. You might plan to make a stop at a famous natural history museum.
Perhaps you have a child who loves professional baseball. You can stop for the day in the city where their favorite team plays, and the whole family can attend a game.
If you let everyone pick an activity, then all your family members should feel valued and seen. That’s something that they should appreciate, especially if they’re having trouble at school or they don’t feel entirely happy in every aspect of their lives.
