48 Hours In Lake Como

Gorgeous villas, quaint towns, and lush gardens.

Lake Como is Italy’s most gorgeous lake and home to celebrities such as George Clooney and Richard Branson. Surrounding the lake are gorgeous villas, quaint towns, and lush gardens. Here are the must-dos in Lake Como.

Getting around:

Purchase a ferry day pass at any of the ticket offices. The ferry will take you on a beautiful boat ride across the lake to the different villages.

Bellagio:

Bellagio is the best-known town in Lake Como. This cute village has narrow cobblestones, steep stairs, adorable shops, and great restaurants. I highly recommend eating at Trattoria San Giacomo for a delicious, local meal. After exploring Bellagio, make sure to go down to the La Punta Ristorante which is right on the water. There is a great grassy area to sit by the lake, read a book, and sun tan, so bring a towel to lay out on.

Varenna:

Varenna is the prettiest town in Lake Como and my favorite village. It has cute cobblestone streets which are lined with brightly colored houses. The town of Varenna is a great place to grab some gelato and relax by the lake. Above the village (about a 20-minute steep walk) you can reach the Castello di Vezio. It is a huge castle with gorgeous views of the lake. Make sure to climb up the tower to the highest viewpoint. I highly recommend seeing the castle.

Tremezzo:

Tremezzo is a little town that is home to the Villa Carlotta. It has a huge botanical garden (20 acres long) which is an amazing place to walk around, enjoy nature, and see views of the vast lake. The three-story villa is located at the top of the garden and has beautiful works of art on display.

Boat rental:

Rent a private boat for a few hours so you can explore the lake on your own and view the gorgeous villas on the waterfront. The water is very calm and it is so relaxing.  You will not regret it.
