A 5-Star Contest: What It’s Like To Win A Suite At One Of Spain’s Finest Resorts

Tucked away along one of the busiest streets in Barcelona is an oasis, a paradise of tranquility nestled between two of Gaudi’s most famous buildings. Unless you are looking for it, the Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona is easy to miss, marked only by a sleek façade, two bellmen waiting down at street level to greet guests and passersby alike, and a ramp, covered in an elegant red carpet, welcoming you towards its luxurious embrace.

To celebrate 10,000 fans on Instagram (follow them!! @mo_barcelona), they proposed a creative contest idea: in one minute, make a video saying “I am a fan of the Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona!” or “Sóc Fan del Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona!” Much to my disbelief, my video was chosen as the winner and thus commenced an incredible 24 hours! (To see my video, visit my page @a.rose_writer).

The unbelievably generous contest pampered me for a day. Upon check-in I was greeted by friendly faces, an attentive staff that spoke several languages fluently, and a warm cup of (ginger?) tea that was absolutely astounding. The room assigned to the contest was one of their Studio Suites, a luxurious style pad with views to their private garden, lush, comfy furniture, and a bathroom with it’s own terrace, walk-in shower, and bath, not to mention a private butler.

I was escorted to the room and my bags were waiting for me when I arrived, along with a bottle of red wine, fresh fruit, and custom chocolates. The bed was perfectly fluffed, everything clean and sparkling to perfection, and the sun was brilliantly streaming in through the terrace window. I was in heaven. After a three-hour trip to the expansive gym, multiple dips in the tranquil pool, and several dozes in the Turkish bath, I was feeling fit, refreshed, and luxurious. The experience of the Turkish bath is open to all guests, not just spa users, and is one I highly recommend. With a relaxing scent (eucalyptus?) and perfect lounge benches, the Turkish bath targets mental and physical health, creating a sauna where I could happily spend my day.

After an incredible few hours, I enjoyed a long shower in the privacy of my own room, lounged in the comfy spa robes, and ordered a pizza and pad thai for dinner (strange but fantastic combination – I highly recommend the pad thai). Upon arriving to my room, I was greeted by another generous surprise from the Mandarin…a chilled bottle of champagne and fresh macaroons and berries with bright red rose petals scattered on the bed! Needless to say, I was ecstatic. The rest of the night was spent in comfortable bliss, enjoying the wine and champagne, lounging on the couch, and thanking my lucky stars for this incredible contest.

I slept perfectly in the large and luxurious king-sized bed, waking up to another quick trip to the sauna and pool and a complementary feast for breakfast. The Mandarin serves an incredible breakfast as well as a tea time display in the late afternoon. You don’t have to be a guest to enjoy them and I highly recommend treating yourself.

After an incredible day it was time to say goodbye, although, I know it’s just for now. A huge thank you to the Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona for their incredible generosity and for welcoming me time and again.

For all of you travelers heading to Barcelona any time soon, there are a million and one things I recommend at the Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona but a few of my favorites are:

  • The tea! (You can enjoy a cup anytime downstairs!)
  • The outdoor patio
  • The sauna
  • ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING at the spa but specifically the Bastien duo manicure/pedicure (it is a whole health and wellness treatment for your nails).
  • The pool
  • The rooms
  • A cocktail at their incredible bar
  • Breakfast
  • A luxurious dinner at their Michelin restaurant

A stay at the Mandarin is one you will never forget!
