When in Paris, there’s probably nothing better than a crusty baguette. Now, France’s President Emmanuel Macron is putting his foodies’ foot down by endorsing the famous French bread as a UNESCO cultural treasure:

“The baguette is the envy of the whole world…Excellence and expertise must be preserved, and that is why it should be heritage-listed.”

According to BBC, the idea is triggered by the success of Italy’s Naples pizza which has been protected by UNESCO since last year. The list is made to preserve traditions from globalization. The Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage meets every year to decide on nominations.

Since 1993, the baguette has been protected by French law. To meet the requirements, the bread needs to be made from: wheat flour, yeast, water, and salt without the inclusion of neither added preservatives nor can it be frozen.

In an interview with Atabula, Dominique Anract, President of the National Confederation of French Patisseries and Bakeries (CNPBF), said:

“When I see the quality of bread in supermarkets, it is impossible not to get angry. The bread is frozen, some of it comes from Romania or who knows where, nothing is carried out in accordance of the rules of the art.”

UNESCO’s Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage emphasizes on traditions in crafts, dance, music and food. The French lace-making and French-style equitation have already made the list. Other international cultural traditions on the list include: flamenco, Tibetan Opera, yoga, and Belgian beer.
