Few restaurants in Hong Kong capture the atmosphere of another era quite like Luk Yu Tea House.

Established in 1933, the historic Cantonese restaurant takes its name from Lu Yu, the Tang Dynasty scholar celebrated for his writings on tea. After moving to its present Stanley Street location in 1976, Luk Yu became deeply woven into the fabric of Central, attracting generations of Hong Kong diners with its traditional Cantonese cooking and distinctly old-fashioned interior. Dark wood, decorative screens, stained glass, vintage furnishings and Chinese calligraphy give the restaurant an unmistakable sense of place, making a meal here feel less like a visit to a contemporary restaurant and more like stepping into an earlier chapter of Hong Kong.

Unlike many of the city’s modern fine-dining establishments, Luk Yu has never been defined by a celebrity chef. Its culinary reputation has instead been built over decades by generations of Cantonese cooks who have preserved the restaurant’s established recipes and techniques. Among the chefs associated with its kitchen is Ip Sai-cheong, who worked at Luk Yu earlier in his career before going on to become executive chef at The Hua Restaurant.
The menu at Luk Yu Tea House is a celebration of traditional Cantonese cooking, with dim sum and classic dishes that emphasize texture, balance and carefully handled ingredients. Among the restaurant’s most recognizable specialties are crispy prawn toast, sweet-and-sour pork with young ginger, and crispy chicken stuffed with glutinous rice.
Other long-standing favorites include grouper toast, fried pork ribs, and sautéed pigeon with crispy Yunnan ham, dishes that reflect the rich, savory side of Cantonese cooking. The restaurant is also known for its soups, including preparations made with ingredients such as pig’s lung and almonds.
Rather than chasing culinary trends, Luk Yu’s appeal comes from consistency and tradition: recipes are allowed to speak for themselves, while Chinese tea remains an important part of the dining experience.
