Frog-themed clothing has become an exceedingly popular fashion craze within the past few years. The trend is particularly prominent among Gen Z, in part due to the prevalence of frog memes like: Pepe the Frog and Kermit sipping tea. It makes sense, then that frog clothing was popularized by social media platforms, especially TikTok which has led to the creation of an entire subculture surrounding frogs. “Frog TikTok” is a section of the app dedicated to frog-related content which users can sometimes find themselves on due to the algorithm that dictates which videos show up on their For You page.

Today, frogs have become just as much of a fashion trend as they are a meme. The popularity of frogs in fashion can be noted from a quick search online. Handmade items are especially trendy in this community. There are over 100,000 results for frog clothing and accessories on Etsy, ranging from crocheted frog hats to frog shaped rings. Frogs have also been popular within Japanese kawaii culture with Sanrio character Keroppi and more than 5,000 frog stickers for sale on the Line Messenger online store. Consequently, much of the frog clothing that exists today fits into the kawaii style.

This frog subculture has ties to the LGBTQIA+ community, somewhat due to the cottagecore aesthetic and Frog and Toad books. Cottagecore, another Gen Z subculture founded online, is an aesthetic dedicated to countryside living. Its nature-based style often features frogs, which LGBTQ+ individuals have embraced within the safe space to express themselves. Similarly, the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel have been recognized as LGBTQ+ representation for their depiction of same-sex love. Frogs have become somewhat of a pillar of the community and these books solidify the connection between frogs and being LGBTQ+.
