Where Was “Outer Banks” Season 3 Filmed?

Barbados and South Carolina in season three of “Outer Banks” will have you screaming P4L at the top of your lungs.

Join the hunt for El Dorado once again in season three of “Outer Banks.” The Pogues are now full blown treasure-hunters, fugitives and somehow still in high school. John B (Chase Stokes,) JJ (Rudy Pankow,) and Pope (Johnathan Daviss,) are now blurring the lines between the Kooks and Pogues forever as Sarah (Madelyn Cline,) and Kiara (Madison Bailey,) have abandoned their lives of privilege to explore the depths of South Carolina for the treasure that alluded them for over a summer. Help them unscramble the clues with these locations in Barbados and coastal South Carolina.

SPOILER WARNING!

Bottom Bay

Bottom Bay in Barbados transforms into Poguelandia for the opening scenes of season three. This gorgeous oasis is underutilized in the episode as the gang leaves in favor of their home, “The Cut.” Mind you, “The Cut” is full of people who either hate them, want to be them, or want to kill them, so their insistence to return is lost on me. The Pogues private island of Bottom Bay is not as desolate as it may seem, as its website boasts the beach is filled with picnic lovers and soon-to-be homeowners wanting an ocean view.

Port Ferdinand Marina

Port Ferdinand Marina plays host to an action scene that does not fit the tone of this teen drama. The plane the teens use to escape Poguelandia crashes into the marina after Sarah realizes the pilot may work for her father. Port Ferdinand Marina is located in St. Peter, Barbados and is almost always paired with Port Ferdinand Luxury Residences. It’s a shame the group didn’t need to take shelter, because if they had, the Luxury Residences are the perfect escape. with “excellent on-site facilities including watersports, dining, spa and fitness centre, and a helpful concierge team” at Port Ferdinand, there’s no telling the amount of “Kook-like” shenanigans that await you.

Lowndes Grove

Lowndes Grove features throughout the series as Sarah’s family home. It’s surprising how often the estate is shown, given Sarah barely lives there. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, Lowndes Grove is “distinguished on the National Register for Historic Places and the Main House showcases 1786-era architecture with period furnishings, an expansive piazza, grand lawn and sunlit terraces made of bluestone, brick and oyster tabby.” Given its posh description, now it is clear why everyone was shocked when Sarah chose John B’s swamp front bungalow.

Shem Creek Marina

Shem Creek Marina in Mount Pleasant is heavily frequented by the friends as they seem to be running from danger, and JJ’s boat creates a perfect escape. This boat is always fueled up and ready to race away from their lives. The marina becomes a safe haven for the group and you too can find solace in the Shem Creek Marina. Located in Mount Pleasant, Shem Creek Marina is called “the ultimate neighborhood marina,” minutes from the harbor in a coastal town with  “Shrimp boats and dolphins, unique shops, great restaurants and taverns make for an unforgettable experience.” Much like the unforgettable experience the fans had seeing Kiara and JJ hug while docked at this marina.

Cove Spring House

The Cove Spring House doubles as the Cameron’s vacation home in the Bahamas. With Lowndes Grove as their “everyday” home, one does wonder what they would need a second mansion for. That question is answered very early on when Rafe (Drew Starkley,) is shown “ruling” his father’s empire from their mansion with assistance from the villainous Carlos Singh (Andy Mcqueen.) The Cove Spring House is located in Barbados and is fit for any ruler, should they choose to vacation here. The house has “10 bedrooms, its own private beach, 75-foot swimming pool, and spa.” If I were Sarah, I would have been questioning how they can afford both mansions way back in season one, especially given her father’s refusal to elaborate on the details of the “family business.”

Lighthouse Inlet Historic Preserve

Lighthouse Inlet Historic Preserve sets up another confrontation for Topper, Sarah’s ex-boyfriend (Austin North) and John B. After breaking up with John B. once again, Sarah runs into Topper’s arms where he whisks her away to a bonfire at Lighthouse Inlet Historic Preserve. I do not know what it is about bonfires, but they seem to attract people and conflict as well as a myriad of bad decisions. After laying out Topper with one punch, John B has to be escorted from the property, all while Topper screams profanities, his blood seeping into the gorgeous white sand. It may be a historic preserve but this scene proves some history should be left alone. Hopefully, the beach will be more tranquil during your visit to South Carolina.

Mcclellanville High School

Mcclellanville High School in South Carolina features in a singular episode of the season and the scene lasts under three minutes. This fact is not entirely surprising because while the teens are in high school, it seems they only set foot on the grounds when they need help from their favorite history teacher, Mr. Sunn (Chris Gerard.) He never questions why the group brings him dirty artifacts or asks about buried treasure in a town legend. For this season, the audience sees more of Mr. Sunn outside the classroom, including the poor educator’s tussle with looters who are after Pope’s grandfather’s diary. Mcclellanville High School may not see much of the Pogues, but it is listed on the National Register as part of the Mcclellanville Historical District.

St. John’s Parish Church

St. John’s Parish Church becomes the backdrop for John B’s reunion with his estranged father, Big John (Charles Halford) in episode two, titled, “The Bells.” In this satisfying episode the scenes cut between the group heading back to “OBX” and Big John ringing the bells in effort to alert his son that he was alive and waiting. The parish, however, has been standing as a landmark of home and security for Barbados since 1676 after it survived a deadly hurricane, and by “1831 nearly 200 years had passed before the property was again destroyed by one of the worst hurricanes on the local record. Undefeated, the church was rebuilt yet again and that structure, created in 1836, still remains today.”

Animal Flower Cove

Animal Flower Cove now leads to El Dorado in the final episode of season three. John B and Sarah risk life and limb to search these underwater caves for the gold. Upon your visit you may not be so lucky but you will find some spectacular views of Barbados, including the walls which are filled with beautiful formations that have been colored green and brown by oxidation of copper and iron. See if you can spot the lizard, turtle and hand formations as you explore the cave for yourself.
