Nobody Wants This is, most likely, the ultimate sign that the world has healed: the return of the classic romantic comedy is now official. Adam Brody and Kristen Bell, two heavyweights from early 2000s drama shows, star as Noah and Joanne, a recently single rabbi and an agnostic sex podcaster. Contrary to what the premise might suggest, Nobody Wants This is refreshing, kind, shrewd, and intelligently funny – a balanced combination of witty dialogues, thought-provoking perspectives, and most importantly, a chemistry as powerful as it is surprising.

The story is based on the life of show creator, Erin Foster. Inspired by her seemingly unlikely romance with her husband, Simon Tikham. In a way that stays true to reality, Foster successfully brings to the screen the complexities of couples with opposite lives who are willing to find their soulmates in each other. Foster infuses authenticity into the production, not only developing characters based on herself and her husband but also depicting a lesser seen, more relatable side of Los Angeles. Religion is, undoubtedly, one of the pivotal themes in the series, creating tension between Joanne and Noah and sparking fascinating discussions about its role in society. For the scenes filmed in synagogues, numerous rabbis were consulted to ensure accurate portrayal of ceremonies and religious practices. Ultimately, production chose Sinai Temple on Wilshire Boulevard as the primary location. This synagogue is the oldest Conservative Jewish congregation in Southern California, founded in 1906 at the corner of 12^th and Valencia. Due to the growing Jewish community in Los Angeles, the temple moved to its current location in 1956.

Sinai Temple prides itself on warmly welcoming all its members, adhering to the principles of Conservative Judaism while opening doors to individuals from diverse backgrounds and affiliations.

De Buena Planta

In this Silver Lake restaurant, Joanne and Noah have their first encounter, navigating through a rather awkward conversation as they start to learn more about each other. De Buena Planta is a popular venue in Los Angeles, with locations in Venice Beach and Silver Lake, offering a culinary concept based on vegan recipes with Mexican inspiration. This so-called “magical oasis” originally started as a pop-up, born from the creator’s passion for plant-based Mexican cuisine and small-batch Mezcal drinks.

In its rustic, plant-filled interior, diners can enjoy signature dishes like nachos with nut-based chorizo, tacos al pastor made with mushrooms, and jackfruit taquitos. Within the building, separate from the main kitchen, lies “La Casita,” a speakeasy space where De Buena Planta serves its most creative and complex cocktails throughout the evening.

Los Feliz 3 Theatre

Noah and Joanne’s first date ends with a stroll and an intimate conversation while they enjoy ice cream, agreeing to define their relationship as “friendly.” The night concludes nonetheless with a passionate kiss, proving there’s more between them than just a beautiful friendship. The backdrop of this romantic moment is the historic Los Feliz 3 Theatre, designed in 1935 by architect Clifford A. Bach.

Vermont Avenue is home to this historic cinema, originally opened as a single-screen theater but was converted into a triplex in the 1990s. Despite the changes, Los Feliz 3 Theatre has retained its original Art Deco style. It showcases a blend of independent, classic and blockbuster films, making it a beloved spot for cinephiles. The American Cinematheque regularly hosts special events, with Cinema 1 often dedicated to screenings throughout the week, preserving the timeless Hollywood charm which has long defined the theater.

Mama Shelter

The contemporary hotel in Hollywood is where Joanne chooses to introduce Noah to her family and friends. Situated near Sunset Boulevard and close to the Walk of Fame, Mama Shelter is known for its laid-back, youthful atmosphere, although the true highlight is its spectacular rooftop that unveil expansive views of the Los Angeles skyline, including the iconic Hollywood sign. A trendy ambience has made this chic hotel a popular meeting point for the city’s sophisticated circles.
