Where Was Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” Filmed?

Let us show you all the places where “3 Body Problem” has broken the laws of physics.

3 Body Problem is one of the latest releases from Netflix, and it already seems to have established itself as one of the platform’s great successes.

The eight-part series, based on Liu Cixi’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, is directed by the creators of Game of Thrones and Alexander Woo (“The Terror,”) making it a sure bet for science fiction fans.

The story begins with the striking scene of young astrophysicist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) witnessing her father’s execution in the course of the Cultural Revolution in China. This will initiate a chain of events culminating in the present day, when a group of detectives and scientists try to defend humanity against alien attacks.

The cast of 3 Body Problem is replete with interesting performers, including: Benedict Wong, Eiza González, John Bradley-West, Alex Sharp, Liam Cunningham, and Jonathan Pryce.

Mainly for logistical reasons, a large number of sequences coming out of 3 Body Problem takes place in enclaves of the British country, shifting a bit from China, where most of the book takes place.

Thus, we can recognize numerous famous landmarks of the nation like Oxford University where “The Oxford Five” – the group of lead scientists – met while studying. The iconic tower of Christ Church College at the university is featured in one of the scenes.

We can see the friends gathered at more times, such as after the funeral when they meet at The Holly Bush in Hampstead, a historic pub in North West London founded in the 18th century.

Piccadilly Circus, one of the busiest and highly exciting streets in the English capital, is used to broadcast the message “You are bugs” during episode 5. The phrase is reproduced through the enormous advertising screens that surround the entire square and have been present since 1920, becoming a greatly recognizable feature of the area.

You might find this “You are bugs” – referring to humanity – familiar, as on March 25th, more than 30 countries around the world displayed these words in heavily trafficked areas. New York’s Times Square, Zona T in Bogotá, Plaza de Callao in Madrid, Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, and Southern Cross Station in Melbourne are a few of the many points to which the publicity for 3 Body Problem reached.

Undoubtedly, some of the most memorable displays in cinema belong to the science fiction genre; nevertheless, their magic is often impossible to recreate in outdoor positions.

For this, productions often resort to the use of studios, and 3 Body Problem has not been the exception. Despite the team tried to develop the story in different parts of the world, some acts were filmed at Shepperton Studios in Surrey.

For example, you surely remember the harrowing sequence when an oil tanker is wrecked while navigating the Panama Canal. The installations of Shepperton Studios facilitated this complex work, as they have a 60-acre lot and several filming sets, sound stages, and set construction workshops. Additionally, it is at the forefront of film technology.

The place has hosted an infinite number of movies and popular shows, such as “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “The Crown,” “Downton Abbey,” and the very own “Game of Thrones.”

The team went across the big pond to use sites like the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where the curtain fell on the first season. Within its installations, the Wallfacer program is intended to be carried out, a plan aiming to protect the Earth.

Although the building is ubicated at 405 E 45th Street in the American city, the funny thing is that it is considered international territory, so it is not under the jurisdiction of any nation and is solely subject to the laws of the United Nations.

Be that as it may, we see 3 Body Problem also moving to Florida and Vedra Beach, where coastal shots were filmed. This is known to be a luxurious tourist destination, and many celebrities have been seen enjoying a vacation under the southern sun. The community, located in the northeast of the state, appears in further hits like “Days of Thunder,” “The Manchurian Candidate,” “The Truman Show,” or “Leatherheads.” Additional specific places in the area include The Magic Beach Hotel in St. Augustine, one of the cheapest motels near Vilano Beach.
