Palace Hotel is without a doubt such a hotel that will confidently withstand the test of time, for as long as San Francisco continues to be a world-class destination (aka forever).
Palace Hotel was San Francisco’s first ever luxury hotel. Built in 1875, it was also the largest hotel in the world at the time. It was built to stand the test of time and there was nothing like it in the world. Unfortunately it didn’t physically fulfill this mission due to the huge San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Though the hotel survived the earthquake, the subsequent fires that spread down Market Street destroyed the building.
After three years of reconstruction, Palace Hotel reopened in 1909. All of the building’s architectural designs are originals from 1909. Despite hardships along the way, the hotel has most definitely withstood the test of time in terms of prestige and elegance. San Francisco will most likely always be an essential destination for jetsetters around the world. And Palace Hotel is the top luxury accommodation in the city where jetsetters can come to experience San Francisco’s deep, captivating history.
There’s nothing more glamorous than walking off Market Street into the wide, elegant façade of Palace Hotel. The location on Market and New Montgomery is ideal for both leisure and business travelers. The hotel is extremely close to the Ferry Building, Chinatown and Union Square. Montgomery is the heart of San Francisco’s bustling financial district, and the Bart and Muni stations are right outside the hotel’s entrance.
Everything inside the hotel is classic, sweeping and grand. The crown jewel of Palace Hotel is the world-famous lobby where Garden Court and lounge are located. Despite being built over 100 years ago, the hotel’s lobby continues to set the standard for timeless luxury. Everything glitters from the plush carpets to the glass vaulted ceilings to the multiple chandeliers hanging in rows. Simply getting to spend time in the opulent lobby makes staying at the hotel worth it.
It’s no wonder that tea time in the lobby is immensely popular with both travelers and locals. A relaxed version of afternoon tea is served in the Garden Court Lounge in the front of the lobby and there’s a bar where guests can get cocktails to enjoy as well. Signature Tea in Garden Court has been a Palace tradition since the 1900s. For Signature Tea, guests can expect fine china, silver service and yummy treats: everything you’d want for the luxurious tea party of your dreams. Garden Court is also where breakfast is served every morning as well as city brunch on Sundays.
The rooms have been renovated throughout the years to install contemporary designs and modern amenities while preserving the historic integrity of the hotel. The hotel recreates classic jetset glamour from the turn of the century when travel was still a luxury. Small details like the suitcase handles and classic nail head designs pay homage to the hotel’s past. The interior design of the hotel is classically inspired but still contemporary.
We love the plush King Deluxe Suite with a bedroom and completely separate living area which is totally worth the splurge. The carved ceiling details, calming lavender hues and swanky views of Market Street are everything you need for the perfect San Francisco city break.
An uber-fun feature of the hotel is the early 20th century style indoor swimming pool encased in glass looking out to skyscrapers above. Swimming and lounging in the bright, indoor pool is a delightful, luxurious experience. One would be hard-pressed to find this style of indoor pool these days, and it’s just the type of Old World treat to expect from a historic hotel like Palace.
Other than Garden Court, Pied Piper is a relaxed, intimate hotspot for drinks, small bites and California comfort food. The painting that hangs in the bar is an original artwork from the hotel’s reopening in 1909. The ambience at Pied Piper is social and laidback. Most of the artisan menu consists of plates meant to share, like the delicious yuzu prawn tempura and the lobster mac.
Palace Hotel is an iconic place to be and has held that place in San Francisco for over a century. It’s a stunning property that keeps up with the times while preserving the historic integrity of the hotel. As San Francisco’s first luxury hotel and once the largest hotel in the world, there’s no question that Palace Hotel will continue to offer jetsetters a timeless experience from the golden age of luxury travel.
