Why we love this: Kuala Lumpur is a huge, hectic city that can quickly wear you out before the day is over. Which is why it’s important to stay at a hotel that’s especially comfortable and easily accessible in order to fully rest and recover. Hotel Maya is exactly that perfect haven and more. As a locally-owned and operated brand, Hotel Maya provides everything that travelers want and need to have the most relaxing stay in the Malaysian capital.

The Story:

Hotel Maya was one of the first hotels to be built along Jalan Ampang, right across from the Petronas Twin Towers, 21 years ago. It is locally owned and managed by a Malaysian company, not by any international hotel brand or chain. This makes it a truly one-of-a-kind property which offers a distinctly local experience for those visiting Kuala Lumpur.

Hotel Maya hones in on the wellness and comfort of their guests as a “boutique urban resort.” The design incorporates many organic elements like flowing water and bamboo paneling with no pretentious frills. Thus the aesthetic and feel of the resort is very modern yet natural, making it an ideal space to relax without any qualms.

The Experience:

During the day the hotel is active and full of movement from guests, locals and business people in and out of the hotel’s outlets and facilities. The majority of guests who stay at Hotel Maya are from Malaysia and Singapore, giving it an authentically local feel unlike what you get at any other international chain hotel.

The warm, genuine service from the staff is what makes the hotel really stand out. One can’t help but feel the warmth and a sincere desire to assist guests from every staff member. From the greeting in the lobby to checking out at reception, every interaction is genuine and personable.

Guests will be delighted to see that the rooms at Hotel Maya are spacious compared to most hotel rooms in major cities these days. Even the smallest room type starts at 350 sq. ft. while junior and deluxe suites go up to 500-700 sq. ft. The junior suite is exceptionally comfortable with a large open space allowing for an executive desk, living area and lounge. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer spectacular views of KL’s business district day and night. Just like the main areas of the hotel, the design in the rooms is natural and contemporary. It provides a calming oasis in which guests can relax while still taking in the vibrant urban sprawl outside.

Although there’s tons of things to do right outside of the hotel, from walking to the Petronas Towers to shopping along Jalan Ampang, it’s hard not to want to stay in at Hotel Maya. Even after 21 years the facilities are still modern and top notch. Somehow, the hotel gets more and more comfortable the longer you stay. Everything from the hotel’s location, amenities and facilities are extremely accessible and unpretentious.

The spa facilities on the 3rd floor are an absolute must! The heated hydrotherapy pool which is half indoors and half in the open air, is divine with powerful jets that soothe every part of your body. One can simply take a dip in the pool and work out kinks without getting a massage. But getting a full treatment at the popular Anggun Spa is still highly recommended. Friendly and professional therapists provide a wide range of Malay massage and body treatments. The treatment rooms have that same organic, comfortable feel so that your body and mind can melt and relax straight away.

There are endless food and beverage options inside (and outside) the hotel. Maya Brasserie is where guests will find a buffet of excellently prepared local dishes as well as comforting Western favorites. Here one can try dishes with authentic Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese and Singaporean flavors, all within the comfort of the hotel. Next door is Still Waters, a more high-end contemporary venue. International chefs serve a creative blend of Japanese and Cantonese-inspired cuisine. And if all else fails, one can always order fries, burgers or char kway teow noodles from room service 24 hours a day.

For first-time travelers to Kuala Lumpur, KLCC is the ideal place to stay. The Petronas Twin Towers are across the street from Hotel Maya so it’s super easy to get KL’s number one tourist attraction out of the way. There are also many commercial centers with tons of shopping and food courts along Jalan Ampang and it’s not difficult to find a rooftop bar or restaurant with a great view. There are multiple metro stations within close walking distance making it easy to access other areas such as Bukit Bintang and KL Sentral. Directly across the street from Hotel Maya is the 24 hour food court, Nasi Kandar Pelita, which we recommend everyone go to at least once for the local flavor!

Sky Lounge: Every day from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., the Sky Lounge on the 13th floor is open to all hotel guests. Guests can treat themselves to free tea, coffee and cakes while enjoying an amazing view of the Petronas Towers and the city skyline.

Buffet Breakfast: The breakfast at Maya Brasserie is a fabulous way to begin the day with a delicious international spread. Other than the typical Western classics like eggs, beans and sausages, guests can also try Malaysian breakfast items like nasi lemak, congee and noodle dishes. The restaurant also makes it a point to fix up a colorful spread of seasonal tropical fruits.
