As one of the Bay Area’s most popular motorcycle routes, Highway 84 has always been a favorite of mine.
You can start off from Interstate 280 (exit Woodside Road) or from the coast side on Interstate 1 (exit San Gregorio Road), as I do in the video. Either way you’re sure to enjoy the great scenic route, with well-paved roads and a good amount of twisties to get your adrenaline going. For the best time to ride, go during the daytime on any weekday, as weekends can get somewhat crowded with the typical rush of weekend joy riders looking to hit the road.
Highway 84, though known for its beautiful Redwood scenery, is perhaps most renowned for Alice’s. In fact if you were to mention Highway 84 to any rider, the first thing they’ll most likely tell you is “Oh, you’re going to Alice’s?” followed by the obligatory “watch out for cops” warning. And if you find yourself in need of gas, don’t worry. Once you hit Alice’s (or ‘Four Corners’ as it’s sometimes called) there’s a gas station right there for you.
Also, weekends are guaranteed to be packed at Alice’s, with several dozen to even hundreds of motorcycles crowding the restaurant’s ample parking lot (for extra parking head across the road to Redwood Trading Post). With a great menu selection and plenty of savory options, as well as plenty of beer and a full bar, Alice’s is a must stop for anyone taking a ride.
