They have managed to master the perfect ratio of bread, to sauce, to cheese, and the flavors the combo imparts cannot be matched anywhere in the world. With hundreds of pizza joints to choose from, we didn’t want you to spend hours searching for that perfect slice. Hence we’ve narrowed down 5 of our favorite places to devour one of New York’s most iconic foods.

Artichoke Basille’s

If you’re going to try only one pizza on this list we recommend it be from Artichoke Basille’s. This place is a pizza game changer. They are most well known for their artichoke pizza (hence the name), and even if you don’t think you like artichoke you have to get a slice. It’s unbelievably creamy and the artichoke flavor isn’t overpowering. If artichoke is too out of your comfort zone, try the vodka slice. The sauce is just a bit tangy, with the perfect amount of cheese to complement it. The crust is a bit thicker than your normal New York style slice, but you need it to help carry the sauce and toppings. Be warned, the slices are huge (like a quarter of a pie huge), so we recommend getting 3 different ones and splitting them with someone.

Speedy Romeo

Tucked away in the Lower East Side is Speedy Romeo, a casual pizza restaurant in what used to be a former auto-body shop. Along with their industrial chic decor, they pride themselves on their hardwood fired Italian pizza oven, which produces some of the most authentic pizza we’ve had outside of Italy. Outside of your regular margherita and white pizzas, they have a few eclectic options like a pastrami, sauerkraut, and everything bagel crust pizza. We recommend the Dangerfield if you like a white based pizza. It has a deliciously creamy bechamel sauce, topped with ricotta, meatballs and garlic chips.

Joe’s Pizza

If you want the quintessential New York City pizza you have to go to Joe’s. It is the perfect slice of pizza ready to be folded up and eaten on the street (which is a good thing since the restaurant itself is so tiny). It’s thinner, flexible crust gives way to deliciously light sauce and melty cheese. You won’t find many toppings here, with your options limited to plain cheese, fresh mozzarella, and sometimes (if you’re lucky) pepperoni. They’re so popular they have three other locations, but their tiny shop off Bleeker Street is the original. This place has been called the best slice in Manhattan for decades, and will probably stay that way for decades to come.

Nonna Maria Slice

A few minutes from Joe’s, Bleecker Street Pizza is another New York City pizza institution. Squeeze into one of the dozen seats inside the shop and savor the well balanced flavor of the sauce and the slightly crispy crust. They’re known for their Nonna Maria slice, which comes with beautifully melted fresh mozzarella, basil, and a marinara sauce that’s hard to beat since it’s infused with even more cheese. There’s always a line almost out the door, but their service is such that even with a long line you’re in and out with a slice within 10 minutes max. It’s the perfect place for your casual, late night slice.

Rocky’s Number II

If you’re all about the pizza toppings then look no further than Rocky’s Number II up on 33rd St. We’re talking buffalo chicken pizza, chicken bacon ranch pizza, and our personal must-try, the penne alla vodka pizza. And when we say penne alla vodka, we mean pasta and all. This deliciously filling slice is everything you imagine and more. If you don’t want to feel grossly full after eating but still crave that vodka sauce, don’t worry, they have a regular slice with vodka sauce instead of marinara. The specialty slice options are endless and while some might think this ruins the simplicity of the perfect New York pie, you still get that amazing crust and sauce to topping ratio so don’t worry.
