Manzanita, Oregon is probably best known for being a neighbor to the bigger, tourist-ier town of Cannon Beach. And don’t get me wrong, Cannon Beach is wonderful, not to mention home to Haystack Rock, but what most people don’t know is that 15 minutes outside of Cannon Beach is one of the best kept secrets in Oregon—Manzanita.

Now I have been going to Manzanita every year for the 4th of July for as long as I can remember, so keep in mind that I am a tad biased. However, let me tell you why once you attend the 4th of July in Manzanita, you’re sure to return the next year and the year after.

The day begins with the Pancake Breakfast.

The pancake breakfast fundraiser is for local schools and is held in fire hall, located at 5th and Laneda. It runs from 8:30 to 11am.

Next up, the Parade.

The annual Manzanita 4th of July Parade is an event you won’t want to miss. A mix of local organizations, companies, family floats, music and candy this parade has got it all.  The parade kicks off at 1pm.

Start your afternoon with a visit to Manzanita Mudd Dogs. Somewhat of a local novelty, the Manzanita Mudd Dogs stand has gained fame in the last few years for their tasty toppings, friendly faces, and great cause that they donate to.

After lunch, walk to the end of Main Street to find the entrance to the beach. A beautiful, all sand and driftwood beach that stretches to the blue pacific ocean, this beach is ideal for sandcastles, skim boarding, bonfires and s’mores.

End the day with Fireworks.

The firework spectacular kicks off around dusk (usually 10pm) on the beach and gives neighboring Rockaway and Cannon Beach a run for their money.

And since Independence Day is on a Friday this year, be sure to check out the local Farmer’s Market for fresh fruits, veggies, and baked delicacies. It runs June through August on Fridays from 5-8pm.

And these are only some of the traditions! Stick around Manzanita after most of the tourists have left to discover everything else that this charming, small, northwest town has to offer.
